I think Gunner first came about as a variant spelling of Gunnar, probably from parents who assumed that Gunnar was pronounced like the English word "gunner".A lot of foreign names don't sound as nice when pronounced by anglophones. Take Japanese names, for example. Most three-syllable Japanese names place emphasis on the first syllable. English-speakers usually put the emphasis on the second syllable.
