I think Gunner first came about as a variant spelling of Gunnar, probably from parents who assumed that Gunnar was pronounced like the English word "gunner".
A lot of foreign names don't sound as nice when pronounced by anglophones. Take Japanese names, for example. Most three-syllable Japanese names place emphasis on the first syllable. English-speakers usually put the emphasis on the second syllable.
