What do you think of Avery? Is it better on f or m? I know a 5 year old boy with that name.

Avery bugs me because IMO it sounds too feminine for a boy and not feminine enough for a girl. But if I had to choose, I'd rather see it on a girl.

It's a bit dated now. I've never really been a fan of it on either gender. It just seems a bit insubstantial.

I don't know what Theodora'sMommy means. It will probably be dated someday, especially for a girl, dated to now (peaked in 2014). But it's not dated now; it's current.

I tried to look up her location on her profile, but she didn't say. I'll bet she's not in the States, though.

I just meant I've noticed the trends on naming boards over the years. Interest in it spiked about 10-15 years ago and has now dropped off sharply. I used to see it on all the same lists as names like Kelsey, Madison, Kennedy, etc. You're more likely to see it on a middleschooler or highschooler than a baby. And since it was a surge and a dropoff instead of a steady popularity, it's dated.

My niece is named Avery Simone, she's 3, and I think it's fits her perfectly. I don't think I would've ever used it, but I don't mind it. I think it's good name.
For a girl, I prefer it as a first name.
For a boy, I prefer it as a middle name.

I really like it for boys, it looks and sounds very masculine to me. I hate it on girls.

Avery is one of those names that I hate. It is better suited for a boy over a girl.

I am struggling so bad with names.
I personally like Freya off our current short list. My hubby says he would prefer Avery.
But everyone keeps saying it’s a boys name. And I don’t like unisex names.
I like Ava but it’s top 10 or something and I hate popular names.
Evelyn also is in the top 20 now :-(
This poor kid is destined to never have a name

Avery IS a male name but more and more girls are being given it. Name nerds tend to dislike that because when there are so many names in each gender category there is no reason to "steal" one from the other.
If you like Freya, I'd also look into Frida, Greta, Joya, Priya, Thora, Ylva, or Oona.
If you like Ava, I'd also look into Ada, Eva, Una, Ina, or Mia.
If you like Evelyn, I'd also look into Emmeline, Adeline, Aveline (you could use your nn Ava), or Evelina.
If you like Freya, I'd also look into Frida, Greta, Joya, Priya, Thora, Ylva, or Oona.
If you like Ava, I'd also look into Ada, Eva, Una, Ina, or Mia.
If you like Evelyn, I'd also look into Emmeline, Adeline, Aveline (you could use your nn Ava), or Evelina.

I feel your pain, but your perfect name is out there.
We take names pretty seriously on this board, but even if you were to choose the worst name in the world, your child will still be a success if they're a cool person. And I highly doubt you'll pick the worst name in the world. It sounds like you're on a good track.

Avery was #16 for girls in the US last year, so technically it's in the top 20 too.

I've always loved it for girls. I can't really picture a boy names Avery, so it is interesting that so many seems to be the total opposite. It is a beautiful name though, and I am sure that if I met a boy or a man names Avery, I would get used to it pretty quick. But right now it is a girls name in my head.

I loved Avery on a boy but whenever the girls take it over to a popular degree I then never feel like I can use it on a boy and it tarnishes it for me. So now I won't use it for either. I have to say though, as far as boys names turned girls names its not the worst one.

I'm not a big fan of unisex names and if I like any I usually have a strong gender preference, but Avery is one of exceptions. Although it's not really in my naming style, I find it very girly on girls and very masculine on boys.

Not for me. The only thing worse than a boy's name on a girl is one that's misspelled to look more feminine. It's like putting lipstick on a pig.

I think it makes it more feminine. I dislike most spelling changes for names but this one looks nice. Only issue is that it looks more like a nn with this spelling. I'm not certain why but names ending in -ie feel like nn's while names ending in -y feel more like fn's. Personally I don't feel that Avery needs a spelling change to be used as a girl's name since it is unisex but if you prefer the spelling Averie then I see nothing wrong with that.

It is a unisex name but I personally prefer it for a boy. The first and only Avery I know well rather than just in passing is a boy. Overall I've met more female than male Avery's. The Avery I know well was born in 2002 or 2003 and his cousin Marcel is like a cousin to me.
Also just because I prefer Avery for a boy doesn't mean I think other people shouldn't use it for a girl. I prefer Rowan for a boy but it is also nice for a girl. Many people who responded on this site also view Avery as a unisex name but prefer it for a boy although most of the US prefers it for a girl based on the popularity data.

I find Avery easier to picture on a boy, although tbh I don't like it on either sex.
