[Opinions] Re: WDYTO Deirdre?
in reply to a message by Felie
Deirdre is cool, but in the U.S., if you're not in a heavily Irish community, it might lead to pronunciation differences. I knew one or two growing up, and I lived in a heavily Hispanic community (both bearers were Hispanic themselves): they pronounced their name DEER-dray, which is neither the traditional Irish pronunciation (DER-dreh) nor one of the ones generally used in England (DEER-druh or DEER-dree; I personally dislike the latter). This might be something you run into in the U.S.; not sure about Canada.I think Deirdre has a vaguely tragic air, but that might be the name's mythological origin influencing me. It's definitely not a name easily forgotten. Conversely, I knew a Deidra in college, and that name was just full of pizzazz! (Still prefer Deirdre, though.)Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381
