Castiel has a pleasant yet still masculine sound. I really like the meaning "shield of God," which makes me think of a guardian angel or someone who protects others.

Ha ha, well, I’m not a fan of the Cas-TEEL pronunciation, it just sounds weird to my ears. I absolutely love and adore the character, and I’ve got used to how Castiel sounds now, so of course I like it. I’d be very chuffed to meet a real life one, but perhaps fortunately, I’d never be able to use it with my favourite name being Caspian, although 100% of the reason I love the nn Cas is that dorky, imperfectly perfect angel.

If I saw it on a child I'd assume it was because of a cringey Supernatural fan, which would sort of ruin it for me. (I don't oppose using fictional character names on principle, but I've seen too many cringey Supernatural fans.)

I'm as much of a fan of Supernatural (and everybody's favourite trenchcoated angel) as you can be, but I can't get behind it.

It's like naming your kid Gandalf or Sansa or Beyonce. It's cool to be a fan of something, and the name might have had some use outside the realm of pop culture, but at the end of the day you and your child will constantly be fielding questions about it, and it seems like a pretty terrible reason to choose a name. It's like people who get tattoos of celebrities, only for the star to become irrelevant or embarrassing, or for the person to lose interest in them.

I know it's possible to hear about the name only in real life as opposed to on TV, as you did. However, in my opinion that doesn't absolve anyone if they use it, because everyone should be putting at least a little research into their kids' name, even if it's just a quick google search.

I'd like to note that I don't think every name that has ever been used in pop culture is off limits... that would leave us with a pretty poor selection of names. Just ones that are so heavily associated with one character/person that you can't help but think of them.

It reminds me a lot of Supernatural. Not that thats bad, at least its not a character from some repulsive TV show whos irritating.

Cool, but I can't say I really dig it. It makes me think of a plaster cast or of the word "castrate". I prefer Cassian.

Did he tell you how it was spelled it or is that an assumed spelling or was that possibly a mistype? I ask because I've come across this name before but it was spelled Castile and that is also how the Kingdom of Castile and the soap of the same name is spelled and pronounced.

Castiel is - as far as I am aware - a fake angel name from the TV show Supernatural and is pronounced the way other people have mentioned.

I like it! I'm more used to cas-tee-el though.

I instantly want to pronounce it as "cas-T-ell" due to the character on supernatural (: (one of my favorite shows)
I dislike the cas-TEEL pronunciation. It sounds less of a name to me.
