[Opinions] a sibset from the obituaries ...
Prince, Royal, Queen and ...
Pope. The family is not Catholic.I'm not really surprised by the first three names, though they are cringe-worthy as a sibset. But Pope seems to cross the line into offensiveness, since the Pope is the head of a specific religious group, a group to which this family does not belong, and Catholic parents would not use the title as a name; I'd imagine they would name after a particular pope if they wanted to honor one. You're entitled to your own opinions. If it weren't in the context of the rest of the sibset, I could assume Pope came from a surname (either family or just following the trend) rather than the Pope. But as it is... Certainly odd.I do rather like Royal, though.

Sounds like their parents wanted them to suffer inferiority (or superiority) complexes!

I agree with you that the sibset is bizarre and cringeworthy. Pope is especially odd.

Prince and Royal, I can get used to. Almanzo Wilder actually had a brother named Royal, so it doesn't seem so weird, to me. Queen? Eh, I would need more time to warm to that one, but I just read a book where one of the characters was named Queenie, so it's not so outlandish. The characters were British, so I'm wondering if this is more of a British name? The only comment a character makes on her name is that it sounds old-fashioned, but no one seems to think it's strange.Pope? Pope is weird. I mean, I guess it could work just as well as the others, but I can't help but hear "poop". Not pleasant.

I've heard that Queen Victoria was so revered, or something, was so out of reach anyway, that people didn't feel comfortable using her name, so used Queenie instead. Then after QV's death it kept on being used in the UK and perhaps the colonies, though not so much.DH had a (black South African) student once whose given names were Queen Elizabeth. As far as he could tell, she regularly went by both; he found it embarrassing.Somewhere in the Anne of Green Gables stories, when she's a university student, she dates a guy who's known as Roy but whose actual name is Royal. I remember being greatly surprised when I read that!
