Opinions on Ruby? It’s my cat’s name (my baby :]), and I’m kind of thinking of using it if I ever have kids.
Disclaimer: no, I do not mean that I plan on naming a kid after a cat.

I LOVE the name Ruby! It's my absolute fave girl name and has been since I was 15 years old. When I met my husband I discovered he had a niece with this name, she's about 12 years old now I think. So sadly I will never get to have a DD with this name, but would encourage others to use it.

I really like Ruby, but it’s too popular here for me to use. I’d encourage anyone else to use it, however, it has such a punchy feel to it.

It's a little too cutesy for me, but I think it would be lovely for someone else's child.
I'm of the opinion that it's fine if you use a name that was used on a pet; I've never understood the strong feelings of doing so. Growing up we had a cat named Samuel "Sam" who lived to be 20, and I'd definitely consider using it.

I love Ruby! It’s been one of my favorite names since I was a kid. I love gemstone names.

It’s a little cutesy, but not so much that it wouldn’t work. I like it. (-:
Side note: I wouldn’t personally be able to use a former pets name as my child’s first name, but I don’t see anything wrong with using a pets name for a middle name. I love my pets like family and like to assume other people do too so I don’t think it’d be too unusual. (-:

I can honestly understand why it might seem weird, but I really don’t see the big deal. Plus, like I said, it’s mostly just that I like the name more than wanting to name after my cat (the significance with the cat is it was my first cat, so I don’t see anything strange about naming after a pet for that reason).

Sometimes people use names for their pets that they love enough to use for a child, but they are not planning on having any more or any children. That's why I once had a dog named Miranda and my sister once had a dog named Sean.
However, if some accident had occurred to either of us, or if our plans had changed, I may have named a daughter Miranda and my sister may have named a son Sean. In this case, it would be because we wouldn't have wanted to eliminate a name we loved because we at one time thought we wouldn't have more children. It wouldn't have been naming the child after the pet.

But the child will still hear stories about the pet, and know that you just recycled the name of an animal rather than thinking they were special enough to deserve their own.

Well exactly. You don’t know if they’re the type to find it hurtful or shameful or not. So why not play it safe and give them their own special name, just for them? There’s a whole world of wonderful names out there.

One of my dogs is named Lara, which is a very common human name here. We know several little Laras and they all like that they share a name with a big, lovable dog.
I also know a family where a dog is named Riki and the cat is Lili, after the kids’ best friends Rikardo and Liliana. All the kids think it’s fabulous and hilarious.
Children, especially those who love animals, often don’t see it as a negative thing at all.

Before I get into my opinion on the name, please never name a baby after a former pet. I can’t believe I’d even have to say that. Sorry.
I’ve never really loved the name. The gem is nice, but the collection of sounds isn’t my favourite, and it reminds me of the unflattering word “rube”.

Also, who says I was looking to name after the cat? That’s partly the reason, but maybe I also just grew to like the name (it’s funny, I never cared for the name until recently, yet I gave it to my cat for who knows why).

I think it's cute, but verging on too cute. Ruby and Daisy and Zoe, they are all so cute I think they're better now on pets than people.
