Jake and Marie live on a small farm in southeastern Montana. Although both Jake and Marie were born in Kentucky, they traveled west as young children with their families. They grew up in the same little community they now live in, and were married when Jake was 20 and Marie was 19. Their five children vary greatly in age, but all contribute to the family. Ed, 15, helps Jake on the farm, and plans to follow in his father's footsteps. Johnny, 13, helps out on the farm as well, but is more interested in reading poetry and following the doctor around. Anna and Alice are more like twins than their one year age difference would suggest. They spend most of their time together in the barn or with their friends. Henry, 4, is just learning his chores, but is already good at weeding the garden and helping Marie around the house.
