[Games] I'm having fun with this! (EDIT: I had the wrong Pope.)
House of WessexH [34]: King Philip Arthur Fulk
W [27]: Queen Edith Adeliza (formerly of Northumbria)D1 [8]: Princess Eleanor Agnes Berengaria
S1 [6]: Prince Geoffrey Fulk Edmund
D2 [4]: Princess Maud Alice Emma

I went back and added a plot to the first post, so I'll continue here. The Archbishop's Overarching WaysThe Kingdom of Wessex & Mercia has done well in peacetime, now that taxes aren't being used to fund any wars. Nell and Geoff now have two younger siblings: Princess Maud, who is said to be the spit and image of her mother, and Prince James, a "spare" for the throne. Maud and James don't seem to have any usage within their families, so their names surprised the court; it would seem that King Philip I and Queen Edith simply liked the names.Even before her marriage and coronation, Edith had endeared herself to the "small folk," visiting people in the surrounding villages and listening to concerns. Children especially were fond of her. The King and Queen ruled as a united front, and appeared to be on friendly terms, which quelled hopes among the court of inciting distrust between them. Those closest to the throne spread tales of true affection between them - which could both help and hurt their image, depending on how the information is used.King Melchior and Queen Rohesia of Northumbria traveled more than sixty leagues south to visit their daughter (for the first time in nine years) and her family during Michaelmas, and to observe how well she has adopted her new homeland. They deemed King Philip and and their daughter to be more than competent, but relayed to them rumors of the discontent of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Since he had never been on bad terms with the crown before, this confused Philip and Edith, the former writing a cordial letter to the Archbishop inquiring about these rumors.Archbishop Richard* responded curtly, accusing Queen Edith of following the "Pelagian Heresy" and not believing in Original Sin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelagianism). Not knowing how the Archbishop would acquire such knowledge, Philip asked Edith if this were true. Edith admitted contemplating Pelagianism briefly at the abbey, for which she was disciplined by the nuns (particularly Mother Arilda of Beauchief Abbey, who despised her), but that she never formally held such beliefs; though she admitted that she didn't believe flesh to be inherently sinful, acknowledging that Jesus was God come to mankind in the flesh. Edith told Philip that most likely Mother Arilda was spreading this falsehood to discredit her. Edith wrote back to Archbishop herself, apprising him of the situation in which she had grown up, but she never received a written response.Soon, the situation worsened. Propaganda circulated throughout Wessex and Mercia, as well as Northumbria, pejoratively calling Edith the "Irish Queen," since St. Jerome had identified Pelagius in his writings as an Irishman. Then the excommunications began: first it was Baron Glastonbury, then Earl Arundel, and then Countess Arundel, who was one of Edith's close friends in Wessex. Among other actions, these people had staunchly defended Queen Edith against accusations of Pelagianism. Guy of Bath privately advised his nephew to divorce Edith on these grounds, fearing the wrath of Rome, but Philip refused. King Philip and Queen Edith tried appealing to Pope Alexander III to grant these people rights to full Communion once again, on the grounds that the excommunications were "vindictive penalties" rather than "medicinal penalties." They await a response.
*Richard of Dover was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1174 to 1184, so I decided to use the real one for this exercise.EDIT: I didn't realize that was Antipope Callixtus III who died in 1178. Pope Alexander III lived until 1181.***Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381
