I'd feel weird using it because my grandmother's name was Delora, but I wouldn't use that...I only like the Spanish pronunciation, and I don't like any of the nicknames for that. I think it's likely some people chose the Delores spelling because it better matched their intuitive pronunciation, and/or maybe it reminded them of their Aunt Della or something.
No, the meaning wouldn't be part of what kept me from using it (I think it actually has the potential to be really profound/complex, as Isaac pointed out, or it could be made more positive depending on middle name choice: like Dolores Althea, Dolores Consuelo, etc).
I think it could make a small comeback but don't expect it will become as popular as it was in the 30s, for the same reasons mirfak stated.
