I went to high school with one. The vibe I get from it is like a cross between Marius and Derek:
part romantic protagonist, part god of war, part boy-next-door, classical but slightly dated in modern (American) use.I'd say “dare-ee-us” unless corrected. The Dare part probably influences my impression of it, too.DAR-ee-əs would sound less dated, more historic, and more European to me.
