The past few years have brought a flurry of engagements and marriages in the House of Northumbria! King Edmund and Queen Alice have quite lost track of all the changes in their extended family in the past few years.
A pox hit the palace in England a few years ago, leaving Edmund with scars across his body and taking little Princess Felicity in its path. A similar strain had taken her cousin in Genoa, Prince Ignatius, not too long before. Queen Philippa scarcely had time to mourn the death of her youngest son before King Hugo began to fall ill. She was the first to notice, and, as King Hugo requested, the only one to know the extent of his illness. At Florian's wedding, the couple was able to put on a brave front, but the king barely lived another year before succumbing to a vicious form of cancer. Florian and Gemma now reign as King and Queen of Genoa, and Gemma just gave birth to a little Crown Prince.
As it turns out, Philippa barely had to worry about getting all of her children married off - all of her children who are of age are now married or engaged! Not long after his older brother's nuptials took place, Prince Crispin fell for a Baroness from a neighboring kingdom. He and Dorothea are now happily married with a little girl and live very close to Florian and Gemma in the royal palace. The Princesses Oriana and Elizabeth also fell in love with Barons, so Philippa had to quickly get over the fact that her children were headstrong enough to marry whoever they wanted, rank be damned. Upon her marriage, Oriana will move with her fiancé, the Baron LeClerc, to a small holding in France. Elizabeth now resides in Scotland with the Baron of Riddoch (her mother turned a blind eye to the fact that Elizabeth and Geraint's elder daughter was born slightly less than nine months after the wedding). Evrardin, the most recently married of the siblings, selected a wife from the family of a French duke who visited Genoa as the family was mourning the loss of King Hugo. And young Grainne has secured an advantageous marriage to the young king of Scotland, to the thrill of her whole family. King Richard has quite recently ascended to the throne, and their union will likely bring a time of greater peace along the border of England and Scotland. Elizabeth is very excited that her little sister will be her queen, though she sometimes kicks herself for settling for a Scottish baron when she could have become the queen of Scotland.
Philippa herself has now entered into an engagement, after procuring the consent of her eldest son. She has recently found herself thrown together very frequently with the aging King of Navarre, a widower who has several sons who could inherit the throne. Admittedly, the king greatly misses his first wife, and Philippa deeply misses Hugo, and each mourner finds comfort in the other. Florian is glad that his mother will have the companionship she so desires. He also thinks he will be able to breathe more easily and rule his kingdom with more freedom when she will be living far from Genoa.
King Edmund and Queen Alice have also seen a few marriages among their children. Duke Fergus and Duchess Amelia are very happily settled together. The Duke of Kinnear, whose holdings are right next to those of Duke Fergus' family, was present at the wedding. At first disappointed that such a lovely princess had married his old friend and not himself, he was delighted to meet her more outgoing twin in the ensuing festivities. Mary is quite happy to be a duchess as well now, and she and Duke Hamnet now have twin daughters of their own. Each of the babies bears the name of one of King Edmund's wives, as a nod to both Mary's natural mother and her stepmother. Prince Charles also found a wife in a lovely French duchess, a marriage that will hopefully mend the relationship between England and France as the years go on. He and Princess Agnes have named their two boys after his beloved cousin and friend, Florian, and Henry, the elder brother he never got to meet. Prince Rupert is happily still in that stage in which boys are much more concerned with hunting than marriage and succession and running a kingdom. Princess Claudia revels in having several playmates in her nieces and nephews.
Beatrice has now sworn that she will never marry again, after now losing her second husband just as she had begun to love him. The injury that Raul experienced after a bad fall from his horse at first seemed treatable, but he declined quickly. Their daughter Marcella now has the Medici title and estate entailed upon her, so Beatrice will rule in her stead as Dowager until Marcella is of age. Adela and Giles have both chosen to move back to England, as Adela is now fully Duchess of Emory. She is also recently married to a former Prince. In Beatrice's opinion, Lancelot of Castile seemed far too eager to give up his title and claim to the throne in order to allow Adela to remain a duchess. But her daughter seems happy, and that's what is most important to Beatrice at this point. Giles is also recently engaged to a young English viscountess, ensuring that he will be able to keep a noble rank. Finn, Simon, and Cloe remain with their mother and half-sister in Genoa for the present, until they may chose to return to England or join the court in Genoa.
Some wonderful things happened during Princess Victoria and Prince Adrian's tour of Europe. Just before they returned home, Victoria was overjoyed to tell her husband that she was pregnant again, and they welcomed their first son several months after settling back in to Portugal. Prince Guy was followed just two years later by his little sister, Princess Blanche. Katherine and Agatha have loved having little siblings at last to dote on, which they had wanted every since spending time with their cousins who live in Genoa.
