--------Time flew by for King Edmund and Queen Alice, and suddenly they had occasion to celebrate 25 years of marriage. True to style, Alice threw a beautiful ball to commemorate the date. Fortune had smiled on their family and their kingdom, and they had much to be thankful for. All of their grandchildren run positively wild about the palace, and Edmund can breathe in peace, knowing that he will be able to hand the throne over to Prince Charles' capable hands when the time comes. The Duchesses of Kinnear and Nottingham delight in being near neighbors, and their children are particularly close. Prince Rupert is quite grown-up now and most recently married to a Princess of Hungary. Three years of marriage have brought them three daughters, and Rupert never knew that he could find joy in something outside of hunting, though he does hope to be allowed to bring his daughters on the hunt once they are old enough to ride. Queen Alice suspects that her youngest daughter, Princess Claudia, might receive offers of marriage from a couple of young members of the court. In response to her mother's queries, Claudia shrugs off the idea of planning a wedding, much preferring right now to be aunt to her small army of nieces and nephews.Philippa is happily settled as the Queen of Navarre, to the relief of King Florian. Though his mother still sends him what seems like a deluge of letters of advice, he feels as though he can much more easily rule Genoa now that she is off and married. He and his siblings do visit her often, though. Upon the sudden death of her fiancé, Princess Oriana traveled to Navarre to stay for a while with her mother and step-father as she mourned. King Quentin introduced his nephew, the Duke of Altard, to his wife's lovely daughter. The princess was still too steeped in grief to pay the duke much attention, but upon her second visit to Navarre a year later, becoming a duchess didn't seem like a bad idea. She and Leopold live quite happily near King Quentin's estate, which guarantees that their children see their grandmother very often. The Baron and Baroness of Riddoch's marriage slowly deteriorated in the past several years. As often happens, the passion that was the foundation of their relationship began to flag, and each turned to various distractions rather than to each other. Elizabeth frequently took their children to see their aunt and uncle at the royal castle, where she would vent her frustrations to Queen Grainne. It was during one of these visits two years ago that she learned of Geraint's death - he had been slain during a duel with his lover's husband. Grainne and King Richard did all that they could to alleviate Elizabeth's sufferings and preserve her family's honor. For now, Elizabeth has taken her children back to the Riddoch estate, where she plans to stay until her children are old enough to inherit. Other than the debacle of Elizabeth's marriage, Grainne has adapted well to being Queen of Scotland. She has encouraged Richard to negotiate with her uncle, King Edmund, their neighbor to the south. Their four children, especially the tiny Princess Olive, keep her very busy, on top of her duties of ruling by Richard's side.Beatrice is glad that all of her children (except Prince Simon) have married in order to keep their titles and status - under the terms of the Emory duchy, the land and title cannot be split among siblings. She slightly resents her brother for not awarding titles to his nieces and nephews, but Edmund is desperately trying to avoid accusations of corruption, especially that the kingdom is finally in a time of peace. (He also doesn't trust certain of his nieces and nephews to take on a title, though he wouldn't dare say so to Beatrice's face.) Adela and Lancelot have welcomed three little girls, and Giles and Arabella have had two sons. Finn and Cloe have also married into the viscount rank, Finn in England and Cloe in Scotland. Their half-sister, Marcella, just recently renounced her claim to the de Medici title and land in Genoa, though her family can't blame her after she received an offer of marriage from a king. Edwin of Galicia was married to his first wife for barely a month before she died of a sudden illness. When he came to Genoa after his wife's death to visit his friend Prince Marius, he was introduced to the Baroness de Medici at court. The two sneaked away from official court events several times together. When Beatrice noticed Marcella's repeated absences, she quickly figured out what was drawing her daughter away and skillfully negotiated a marriage pact with the widowed king. The baronet will now be taken over by a distant Medici cousin, and Beatrice has now moved herself back to England to live out her days with Adela and Lancelot. Two years ago, Edmund, Philippa, and Beatrice were devastated to learn of their youngest sister's sudden passing. Well, sudden to most of the world. Not long before Agatha's wedding to the Viscount of Basnage, Prince Adrian had begun to notice that his wife had not recovered from a winter cough. The royal physician diagnosed Princess Victoria with the consumption, and Adrian prepared for the worst, while concealing his wife's condition to the best of his abilities. After losing their son several years before, it was almost too much for him to bear. Not a week after Agatha became a Viscountess, Victoria was gone, and her family made another trip to Portugal, though this time for reasons much less joyful. After an acceptable period of mourning, Prince Adrian remarried a widowed Duchess, whose only son was now old enough to take over her title. Princess Laura has proved to be a kind stepmother to Blanche, the only child who remains at home, as Katherine is recently engaged to the Baron de Gosbeck.Years will continue to pass. Kingdoms will still need to be ruled. And King Edmund hopes that his legacy will prove itself in time. As he gazes upon his wife and children and thinks of all that they have faced together, he knows that he at least did something right.~ Amalia"No story lives unless someone wants to listen."http://www.behindthename.com/pnl/91617
