DW: (20) Phoenix Dream {Falcon} Galt
21 years ago, Mr Falcon found himself in a debt that would see himself and his pregnant wife evicted from their home and out on the streets. To keep a roof over their heads, Mr and Mrs Falcon agreed to betroth their unborn daughter to the newborn son of a wealthy, though shady, city family.
For 18 years, parents of strong-willed little Phoenix Dream kept the secret of her promised heart from her. Although the family continued to struggle financially and not have much, Phoenix found light, laughter and love in everything around her. She hardly sat still, was always rushing through the backstreets on a handcrafted skateboard or running errands for those less fortunate around her. Although an only child, Phoenix endeavoured to look after the other street children and showed a great maternal instinct towards them. Phoenix Dream was loved by all who met her, she had a light radiating from her that was seldom seen where she grew up.
Meanwhile, Wix Galt - also unaware of his marked life - lived a mere 3 miles in the Northend. His life was lonely despite three younger brothers and loving nannies. With a workaholic father and a mother who preferred to spend her husband's wage on shoes or booze, Wix hardened his heart and shut himself away from the world. He grew rude, impatient, entitled. Everything was too easy, everything was handed to him on a plate, everything was his if he wanted it and he wanted it - or at least he thought he did. His life was perfect and made around him, what more could he want?
On Phoenix Dream's 18th birthday, 9 months after Wix had already become an adult, unusual guests arrived at her and her family's tiny backstreet home. Her mother opened the door and sounds of shouts and sobs filled the room. Frail from years of laborious work, Mr Falcon tried to move from his armchair but couldn't. Phoenix went to see what was going on. 3 well-dressed people huddled halfway through the doorway. A gentleman in a blue suit, a lady with pearls and a pale boy - not much older than Phoenix herself - with Rockstar hair, hands in his pockets and eyes that looked everywhere except inside the house... Until Phoenix stepped there. Wix looked up. Their eyes met. He stopped breathing as he struggled to take in the breathtaking sight in front of him. Flaming hair to her waist, fierce blue eyes, tanned skin, red lips, her gaze drunk in everything around her, never lingering on any one thing for too long as she decided what her next move would be.
Phoenix felt as though she was underwater as the three strangers barged their way into her home and the truth was revealed to her. All while the adults spoke - over each other, in a rabble, confused and unscripted - the boy didn't take his eyes off her.
Suffocating, listening to her life like it didn't belong to her, Phoenix dream did the only thing she knew how to. She ran.
Over the bodies, out the back door, scrabbled the wall, through Old Man Peeta's over-grown garden, not stopping to pet the Smithson's dogs, not stopping to say hello to the Grange Kids, not stopping for anyone or anything. Phoenix didn't stop. She had the clothes on her back, the pennies and the fluff in her pocket but she wouldn't go back if her life was nothing except to be a rich man's prize.
Phoenix Dream ran for nearly a year. Taking cash jobs, making friends and staying on their sofas, living anonymously. One day word got to her at the bar where she worked that there was a sick old man looking for his runaway kid, a flaming haired beauty named Phoenix Dream. The man was ill and homeless, his one final wish was to be reunited with his daughter. He was staying at a local motel. Phoenix went straight after her shift. Mr Falcon was lying in Room 181. Pale, ghastly, a former shadow of the man he once was. He thought Phoenix was a ghost at first, he didn't recognise her cropped Pixie haircut or hardened blue eyes. They talked for hours. Father and daughter laying it all on the line. He told her the truth, for the first time in Phoenix's life, he explained it all. And they cried. Oh how they cried. And as the sun began to rise on a new day, Mr Falcon took his daughter's hands in his, "Phoenix Dream, marry that boy, live the life your mother and I could never have provided, have everything you deserve, it's my wish for you." And as the sun began to rise on a new day, Mr Falcon's hands slipped from his daughter's.
Wix had spent eleven months searching for Phoenix Dream, posters, advertisements, rewards, drive-bys, interviews. He'd been to some of the ugliest places he ever could imagine and seen squalor like he never would have believed. He'd fallen in love with Phoenix Dream the moment he laid eyes on her and eleven months without her had caused him pain like he'd never felt before. He'd almost given up on ever seeing her again when she walked through his door, threw down a dirty backpack of belongings and said, "I'll do it."

DH: (32) Lexer Cyrus Valk "Lex"
Lex and Zai have been in love forever. From the moment they met fifteen years ago when they were both in fairly dark places and brought each other out of them with the power of love. Everybody comments on how magical their relationship is and how they brighten up the room when they are both together. They too have believed that, until now. For the first time their relationship has hit a snag that hasn't been resolvable. Lex feels they have reached the peak of their strength as a unit of two and would love nothing more than to extend their happiness to a child of their own - biological or adopted, he couldn't care! Trying to talk to Zai about his hopes for the pitter-patter of tiny feet was nigh on impossible. Lex got shut down immediately. All conversations about children were cut short, were they allowed to start at all! One night Lex had had enough and in the heat of yet another non-start conversation/argument, he announced that he would find somebody who loved him enough to have a family with him. Zai broke down.
Flashback 17 years to before Zai and Lex had even met. Zai was a normal teenager, he had good friendships with some not-so-good people (although he didn't see that), he found school pretty easy but enjoyable, his parents were loving, he even got on well with his older sister (now that she'd moved out!) One evening, his father and brother-in-law were out of town on a "lads weekend", his mother and sister had tickets to a concert so Poppy asked Zai to babysit his 8-month-old niece. Zai loved the baby and he didn't have plans so he was happy to. His mother and Poppy left at 6:30pm, at 7pm, Zai's friends turn up with speakers and beer. Zai tries to tell them that this isn't a house party situation, there's a baby upstairs and he's responsible. His friends convince him otherwise.
The noise of the teenage boys' music, swearing and drinking wakes the baby. Zai can't settle, he keeps listening to the baby crying on the monitor. One of his friends takes the monitor from Zai and replaces it with a bottle. Zai figures that just one won't hurt. His friends turn the music up, no one can hear the baby anymore, Zai drinks the bottle, then another, then another. Some people are smoking in the kitchen.
At 1am, his mother and sister return. Zai's mates are still in the house. While his mother kicks off, Poppy goes to check on the baby. That's when the shouting starts. She runs down stairs clutching her baby, she's blue, she's not moving. Poppy demands to know, when did she go to sleep, when did she stop crying, when did Zai last check on her? He doesn't know the answer to anything. Nothing can be done to save the baby. A post-mortem determines it's Cot Death. Zai is plagued by guilt.
Less than a month later he moves out. He's never spoken to his family since and he's never told anybody that he killed his niece. It's more than Zai just "doesn't like children", he doesn't think he deserves them.

For Pixi, the moment she walked into her new office and met Zee, she knew that was the person she wanted to spend forever with. In the beginning it felt like Zee didn't even see her, didn't know who she was, would look through her. Zee never attended work parties, after-work drinks or invite anybody anywhere. She took lunch at her desk, completed her work dutifully and thoroughly, kept herself to herself. And yet, Pixi was infatuated. She went out of her way to catch Zee when she couldn't hide, at the water-cooler, at the photocopier, even coming out of the bathroom (though Pixi tried not to make that an obvious or creepy habit). Eventually, Zee started to come out of her shell, they talked and became friends in work. People around them noticed Zee smiling more, taking a coffee break, listening to other people's conversations about social events.
As the staff Christmas party approached, Pixi made her move and invited Zee. At first Zee seemed shocked, Pixi thought she'd made a mistake but a day later Zee accepted. The Christmas party played out like a movie scene, Zee and Pixi arrived together, people complimented them as a pair, they smiled nervously and went to socialise separately but always found their way back to each other. At the end of the night they found themselves under the mistletoe.
Pixi proposed to Zee at high summer and they married that Christmas; just three months ago. Marriage life for them was bliss, they both expressed that they'd never been this happy but something niggled at Pixi, she felt that Zee wasn't committing 100%. Recently, Pixi found what Zee had been hiding from her. While looking for her birth certificate, Pixi came across two scrumpled, photocopied pieces of paper stuffed at the back of a drawer. They were birth certificates but not Pixi's, not Zee's. They were birth certificates for two children born thirteen and eleven years ago, children who were mothered by Zee Hygrace.
Pixi confronted her wife that evening and this is the story she had to tell...
When Zee was 15 she met an older guy. She fell in love - or at least thought she did. He was reckless and exciting. Dangerous and thrilling. She thought the arguments they had were passion. She thought the bruises he'd leave were accidents. After all, he always apologised for them afterwards. She tried to end it with him a few times but she always found her way back to him, a drug she couldn't live without. One day, she was 20, she'd come home from a night out celebrating her friend's 21st birthday, it was late but she hadn't drunk, he beat her until she couldn't see. She told everyone she'd fallen down the stairs drunk but the next morning she'd packed her bags and walked out. Zee's life without him in it seemed listless to begin with, she was scared he'd be round the corner, she scared to start living without his permission... And just as she began to breathe again... He appeared around the corner. He snapped his fingers and she was back at his side in a second, six years had passed but nothing had changed inside her. Zee fell pregnant quickly. She was terrified but he seemed ecstatic. She thought maybe a baby would change him, change them. It didn't. For nine months he didn't lay a finger on her but the moment his baby daughter was in her arms, Zee was a piece of dirt again.
Fastforward three years. Zee has a daughter, Freya, and a son, Ender. Her husband works and demands, talks with his fists and smiles at the children. Freya doesn't sleep through the night, Ender is teething, Zee is exhausted physically and emotionally. She doesn't leave the house, her husband doesn't want the kids at nursery so she stays at home with them all day, she doesn't have a car, doesn't have a house key or any money of her own, she's a prisoner. Ender turns one, Zee wants to do something to celebrate so she leaves the door open and takes the children to buy a cake. When she gets home he's there. The children and him eat their cake but Zee's eyes are too swollen to see, maybe a couple of ribs are broken this time, she things a few fingers are dislocated and her lip is split.
In the night she packs three bags but is caught. he demands to know what she is doing; she's leaving and taking the kids. He goes and picks up his son from the crib, still sleeping, he holds him and doesn't let him go. Zee shouts and screams as he raises him up, higher, higher, away from her. He promises if she leaves, and never looks back, he'll take care of his children but if she stays she's sentencing them to a life of what she has suffered.
So in the night she drops two bags. And she leaves with one. Never looking back.
Zee lived the next decade behind a wall. Nobody bothered to try to get to know her, until Pixi bounced into her life. So beautiful and full of light and energy, Zee had never met anybody like her, she couldn't believe it when she took an interest in her too. And although she tried to fight it, in the end Zee just couldn't deny the attraction.
But always, in the back of her mind, was the babies she left.
