yessssssssssIlinca- looove. reminds me of the Hungarian Ilonka, but better. maybe a little cutesy, though.
Elena- kind of bland to me, but nothing major wrong with it. classic.
Crina- adorable, but has an edge to it that i love.
Ioana - doesn't stand out so much to me, besides for the pretty spelling imo.
Sorina - lovely, though i'd already consider using Sorin, so it's out.
Carmen- perfect balance of soft and strong.
Maria - same as Elena.
Viorica - i used to really love it, before hearing how my aunt Ibolya had to go by this in order for Ceausescu to overlook our family's record of leaving the country and allow her into college. she said she doesn't like this name. i'd choose Ilinca for sure. it's already similar to one of my favorites, Ileana. some other ones i love:Cosmina
Loredana
Luminita
Raluca
Ramona
Ruxandra

Thanks :) Sad that your aunt had to change her name. I didn't know that he did stuff like that as well. He kind of ruined the name Nicolae for me even though it's still common in Romania and I know several other ones. I love Ruxandra and Luminita.Do you know where Ilinca comes from? On this site it says Elena but on many Romanian sites it say Ilie.

she luckily didn't have to fully change it- i believe she just applied to/went through college with that name, to get around the background check. background checks and legal documentation was not so thorough back then. still awful that she had to at all, of course. also this site seems to be the most well researched of all name sites. so i'd bet that Ilinca comes from Elena, especially since Ilonka is from Ilona (which is generally accepted to be a form of Helena, and so connected to Elena).

Every time someone has a Ceausescu story, they get crazier and crazier.
I think your aunt has a perfectly legitimate reason for not liking the name.

the logic was that the state shouldn't bother to give a college education to someone who might escape to America like her family members did. ironically, my mom mainly left to begin with because she couldn't go to a Romanian college for that exact reason. she didn't think to apply under a different name like my aunt did.

Ilinca -It's okay, but I can't see it as a standalone name.
Elena -lovely
Crina -It's kind of cutesy, but I can't say I like how it ages. Also, I feel like it's somneone rushing the name Corina.
Ioana -Very nice.
Sorina -lovely, and I prefer it to the similar Serena and Sarina.
Carmen -it's cute
Maria -I mean, it's okay, but kind of dull at this point. You'd have to pair it with something more exciting.
Viorica -fun to say, but I definitely prefer the masculine Viorel. If I had to rename myself one of these, I'd choose Sorina, probably.

i love how there's a masculine form of Catalin. i would consider using it, if it wouldn't be mistaken for a twist on Caitlin in the US. Silviu used to be on my top 10, and i wouldn't use it anymore, but i still have a soft spot for it. i also love Corina, Ileana (!), Rahela (! forgot this! would def use), Florin, Laurentiu, and Mircea if not for one association i have (gosh that has to ruin soo many names..)

Thank you :)I also like Ileana, Madalina, Lalea (but even though I have lived in Romania for a long time I have never encountered this as a nmame so I think it's not used or hardly ever used. I have even encountered several women with much longer and unusual flower names such as Lacramioara and Micsunica but never Lalea which seems pleasant enough to me and more usable than Lacramioara which apart from being a nice flower consists of the Romanian words for 'small' and 'tear' which I find rather sad :P), Ruxandra and Luminita. For boys I like Mircea. I would also like Codrin and Codrina, they have a great meaning. But I don't really like the sound too much.and sorry I was too lazy for the accents, it's late here ;)

Elena Maria (as a first and middle, or perhaps a double-barrel)

Sorina and Viorica jump out to me as the most interesting with Ioana coming in third. I don't care for the rest. I would probably use Sorina Viorica Lastname.

Love Elena and Maria. Sorina also sounds very pretty and sweet. Crina’s nice but I think I prefer Corinna. Never was a fan of Carmen, and I don’t like the look / sound of Viorica. Ilinca seems interesting, I’ll have to look into it more.I’d go with Elena. (-:

I've always liked Elena. Carmen is the epitome of cool. Sorina and Viorica are also interesting.
