[Games] ERB's KUY Congrats - Round 1 of 10: 16th Century Edition!
I have not hosted a KUY is a really, really long time. But since saphirdufeu's imaginative Medieval KUY, I decided to try my hand at another. But this time... were going into the Renaissance, baby! Sixteenth century, here we go!
And please, feel absolutely free to write a story to go with your characters!
When I first thought of doing this, I had thought about making participants roll for ethnicity (Italian, English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, or Russian), and use the corresponding namebanks. But then I realized that I would have to make about eight times more namebanks for future rounds, if multiple participants were in different countries. So I decided to localize it:
We are in England, 1593! The height of Elizabethan theater! (Sometimes I'll bring in outside influences / characters - this is, after all, the Renaissance.)
We shall start with the initial couple:
SO1:
SO2:
While ages will be up to you, for each SO you will roll a d-8 to determine their background or their family's background (dice can be found here: http://www.brockjones.com/dieroller/dice.htm):
1. Nobility
2. Landed gentry ("gentleman" / "gentlewoman")
3. Legal official (MP - Commons, judge, solicitor / attorney / proctor, watchman, etc.)
4. Merchant
5. Artisan / craftsman (master, journeyman, or apprentice)
6. Tenant farmer
7. Artist (painter, actor, writer, etc.)
8. Criminal
Then, let's roll for kids! Roll a d-10, and the number determines how many kids they have:
1 or 6: 1 child
2 or 7: 2 children
3 or 8: 3 children
4 or 9: 4 children
5 or 10: no children
Genders are determined by the roll of the die: odd = boy, even = girl. For the ages of the kids (if there are any), roll the d-10, and then add 10 years. Whether any are step-children, or wards / fosters, is entirely up to you.
Now, roll for names!
Names (if you wish to alter spellings of some names, since spellings weren't standardized for this time - e.g. Katheryn instead of Catherine - feel free!):
1. Any from here: https://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/greek-mythology,roman-mythology
2. Benjamin Caleb Daniel David Isaac Jacob Joseph Michael Nathaniel Paul / Abigail Deborah Hannah Hester Martha Rachel Rebecca Ruth Sarah Tabitha
3. Any from here: https://tinyurl.com/celticnamesforrenaissance
4. Agrippa Drake Leonard Lyall Philip Randolf Roswell Sparrow Todd Ulric / Acacia Daisy Flora Heather Hyacinth Iris Ivy Lily Rose Violet
5. Re-roll
6. Use Nymbler (http://www.nymbler.com): enter the names from choice 10 for the corresponding genders!
7. Atpeace Canaan Creedence Eleazar Hosea Ichabod Pardon Phineas Prosper Repentance / Bathsheba Constant Endure Gethsemane Jael Joy-in-sorrow Mehitabel Modesty Peninnah Thomasin*
8. Anthony Bertram Duncan Hamnet Launce Malcolm Pharamond Timon Tybalt Yorick / Audrey Beatrice Claribell Gertrude Hermia Hero Julia Lucetta Rosalind
9. Free choice from any name presented here!
10. Charles Christopher Edward Henry James John Peter Stephen Thomas William / Anne Catherine Cecily Eleanor Frances Jane Joan Margaret Mary Sophia
Surnames:
1 or 6. Marlowe, Mac Giolla Eoin (McGillan), Priddy, Cavendish, Williams
2 or 7. Hathaway, MacIomhair (MacIver), ab / ferch Harry (Parry), Cecil, Jones
3 or 8. Jonson, Ó hAnnagáin (O'Hannigan), Cadwallader, de Ferrers, Taylor

Lycus Jonson and Lily Rose Taylor grew up in the same little town, where Lycus' father, Jon, was a farmer and Lily Rose came from a family of (you guessed it!) tailors and seamstresses. Their two girls, Jael and Julia, are beautiful young ladies, and Lycus is entertaining various suitors to see who will be a good fit for each girl. Both Jael and Julia work with Lily Rose as seamstresses, though Jael often helps Lycus on his merchant trips (to look at new fabrics and fashions, of course).

DH: (40) Bertram Hamnet Cavendish (carpenter)
DW: (37) Hermia Beatrice Cavendish (professional complainer and carpenter's wife)
DD: (18) Eira Brigid Cavendish (gentlewoman-to-be)
DS: (16) Henry Phineas Cavendish (carpenter's apprentice)
DD: (13) Katherine Mary Cavendish (professional hopeless romantic)
Bertram Cavendish is usually very easygoing, humble, and accommodating, unless there is something he is passionate about, in which case, he will not stop until he has done what he wants to do. Nineteen years ago, what he wanted most was to marry Hermia Cadwallader, the petite and pessimistic blacksmith's daughter.
But the thing about Hermia was: Though she was but little, she was fierce.
Bertram brought her flowers. He wrote poems about her. (they weren't very good poems, but it's the thought that counts) Heck, he learned to spin so he could help with her chores!
He asked her to marry him five times. The first four times, she said no.
Then, one day, she fell in the river. The current was strong, and she could barely swim. She was pulled under. Bertram saw her fall in, so he jumped in after her. He grabbed onto a tree root and pulled her onto dry land.
He wasn't so rude to propose to her again, but Hermia knew he wanted to.
"I would say yes, but then you'll control my life," she said.
"I won't, I promise," he said.
"But you will, though. My father did. And my sister's husband did. They take took their wives' lives and mold them into part of themselves. And I won't let anyone do that to me."
"I would never do that. I love you."
"I'm not just going to take your word for it."
So Bertram stopped trying to convince Hermia to love him, and started proving that he wasn't manipulative or controlling. And eventually, he proposed again. And Hermia said yes.
Nineteen years later, they live in London and have 3 children: Eira, Henry, and Katherine. Hermia and Bertram are arranging Eira's marriage to an estate owner, Nathaniel Ó'hannagáin. She's not sure how she feels about this. On the one hand, she's not super excited about getting married, but on the other hand, Nat is really sweet...

Being born as the oldest son of 5th Earl of Essex in 1561 Desmond's life was lined up already at the time of his birth, one day he would marry well, take over his father's title and run the family estates, a life full of luxury at that time. The first cracks to the perfect plan appeared already three years later when Desmond's mother and unborn twin brothers died in childbirth. His father decided to drown his sorrow in alcohol, not caring about his son and two daughters or any of his estates. During the twelve years of his escapades and neglect the estates have lost their value and so did the family name. When Desmond took over the family property as the 6th Earl of Essex at the tender age of fifteen it was clear that there was not much left of the once thriving family property and there were certainly no brides that would his late parents find suitable lined up waiting to marry him.
Unlike his father Desmond turned to hard work instead of alcohol. Rebuilding the estates to what they once were before was not an easy task, but he was determined to provide a good life for him, his sisters and as it later turned out also his family. The sixteen year old Gaenor Cavendish of the Cavendish Baronets, would be considered below his rank by his overly snobbish parents, but Desmond was not dividing people by their ranks but by their characters. Gaenor caught his eye immediately with her sweet nurturing personality and the same determintation that he possessed. He proposed mere two weeks after their first meeting and they were married within the next two months at his estate. The rumor mills were turning and the marriage had little to no support in the noble circles, as if the MacShuibhne's haven't been outcasts way before it happened. Neither of that bothered Desmond and Gaenor in their first happy days together, ten months after their whirlwind wedding they've been blessed with a son, Philip, who would one day take over the estates from his parents and three daughters Rosalind, Margaret and Cecily followed as the years rolled by. The MacShuibhne family thriving in all fields.

Born in 1549 in Abertawe (Swansea), Wales to a local smuggler, Pawl ap Gareth Priddy never really had a chance to live a law-abiding life. His mother died in childbirth, and Gareth - who never talked about her - needed his only son to carry on the business of getting English goods to the Welsh past Cardiff without paying the heavy importation tax. Ensuring that his son would have even more success, Gareth made sure Pawl spoke English as well as Welsh. High risk, high reward: that was how the small Priddy house lived. This was until Gareth was killed one night on the docks, when Pawl was only twenty. Instead of taking his father's place helming the smuggling operation, and fighting the war with Gareth's second-in-command that was sure to come, Pawl sold the ownership and set off for London, England to make his fortune.
There was only one problem, though: Pawl only really knew how to do illegal things. It really wasn't long before he turned himself into a moneylender in the city. As soon as he started signing his name "Paul," even the gentry went to him to fund ventures, from the innocent to the nefarious - for if there is one thing the rich and poor hate in equal measure, it's taxes. Paul Priddy's loansharking rarely dipped its toes into gruesome territory; nevertheless he made it clear, even at his young age, that he was not to be crossed. By the time he was 25, Paul had an empire of his own in the London underworld.
That was when one of his henchman made an offhand comment about a family of his own. Paul had been alone for so long - and only with his father before - that he hadn't even thought about it. But the henchman was right: he needed a legacy. So he set out to look for a wife.

DD: Joan Líadan Cadwallader (14)
Benjamin and Heather welcomed Joan shortly after their wedding, a small secret affair hidden from Heather's parents for fear of their disapproval. While Benjamin worked in town as an apprentice blacksmith, Heather came from a family with some money. Though they didn't have enough to set them too far apart, Heather's parents preferred their daughter fraternize with people of her own status. Heather disagreed.
Every week when she would go into town to gather the things her mother needed, Heather would stop at the blacksmith's just to say hello to Benjamim. This started when they were still very young. Their friendship blossomed into a romance and by the time they were eighteen, they made their wedding plans. Heather convinced her mother that she needed some time away from home, her mother giving her enough time for Heather and Benjamin to run away, get married, and get pregnant before any questions were asked.
By the time Heather's mother learned of her daughter's marriage, Heather and Benjamin had settled into their new life in London.
At fourteen years old, Joan has the same spitfire spirit her mother did as a child. Joan prefers to tramp through the woods when her father is free to supervise or run about the city during the time he must work (which much to Joan's chagrin is most of the time). Joan has made friends with everyone, near and far, and has gained herself the nickname of The Little Wanderer.

Hester & Daniel Mac Giolla Eoin met in a rather interesting situation. Daniel Mac Giolla Eoin was the son of a well known thief - his father had many affairs with many different women & Daniel was his father's only son. Daniel being the only son of a thief meant his father wanted him to continued his criminal background. After Daniel's father died when Daniel was only 20 Daniel wanted to avenge his father in some way. Daniel set his sights on his local King's palace. It was not the best idea but Daniel was determined. As Daniel snuck into the castle he found his way to Hester Ó Catháin's room. He woke her up & she was fixated on Daniel. She was only seventeen at the time & had never seen a man in her room before. Daniel noticed & was afraid she'd make a scene. He motioned for her to follow him out of the castle - he had no idea what to do. Hester had always wanted to escape her palace not alone of course & this was her chance.
Hester & Daniel left the palace with no plan but over the weeks of hiding they fell in love. Daniel was afraid Hester would fight him taking her with him but she didn't even fret. Hester was reported missing & her father the king was determined to find her. Hester wanted to escape because her father wanted to marry her off to whoever paid him the most. Daniel & Hester fled the kingdom too in love to look back. Hester soon fell pregnant but their first child died shortly after child birth.
Years later after they settled down into a new kingdom & had gotten married Hester found herself pregnant again, afraid she would lose the baby she hardly left the home. Shortly there after they welcomed their first daughter Acacia Hyacinth into the world. Hester & Daniel were happy to finally have their own child.
