Hester's marriage to Rowland Blanchet was an utter disaster. It's almost as if poor little Lemuel knew this, could feel the negative atmosphere of their lavish home, because he sadly did not live long past his first birthday. Hester started locking her bedroom door at night and trying to find a way to petition for divorce, but the magistrates wouldn't hear her. It was through sheer happenstance that she met a business ally of Rowland's, Señor Luciano Sosa Gagnon from Barcelona. He was the king of dashing gentleman Hester had fantasized about as a girl. And he didn't seem too fond of Rowland as a person. Thus she had the perfect solution to her divorce quandary: indiscreet adultery. Because then it was Rowland who petitioned for divorce, on the grounds of adultery and a "cold bed." As soon as the divorce was finalized, Hester married Luciano and became Señora Sosa - and it was at that moment that Owen disowned his oldest surviving child. Strangely, Hester wasn't as heartbroken over that as she supposed she should have been. She hadn't really known her father for over a decade - he'd slowly transformed into a weaker version of her maternal grandfather, who had also written off her and her sister's existences. Over the next few years Hester birthed a daughter, Francisca, and a son, Abraham.
It didn't matter that Owen had disowned Hester over her "antics" - Rowland Blanchet, after the finalization of the divorce, forced Owen out of the mercantile enterprise, and essentially out of the estate. At that point, Owen took his sister, Maud, and daughter, Prissy, and moved in with Nat & Vita, who themselves had relocated to Covent Garden, near the house they'd all grown up in. Owen was somewhat a help with the money-lending business, but Nat would've preferred it immensely if he drank less.
During this time, Maud met an English gentleman who was the son of a Belgian (like her brother-in-law Cornelis) and an Italian. His name was Radboud Cremonesi, and he was a playwright under the pseudonym "John Landon." Much to Maud's initial chagrin, he insisted "Maud" didn't suit her, and began calling her "Isa" - and she was reluctant to admit how much she liked the sound, having hated her given name for many years. The Priddy family funny supported their relationship and encouraged Radboud's talent, and they married soon. Maud, or "Isa," has given birth to three children since: two sons, Fortunato and Emerens, and a daughter, Kasimira "Mira." And in the meantime Radboud's twisted tragedy The Brother and Sister has gripped London audiences! Prissy, still unattached, has oved in with Radboud and Maud to help care for the children, which also puts distance between her and her father.
Ben & Verena still run the Roebuck, along with the eldest son Dieter. Not much has changed, other than Bas beginning an apprenticeship at a goldsmithy. His Aunt Nell prays nothing bad happens to him, like what happened to poor Alban Thrussell. Nell's stepson Timo, and his wife Gitta, now have two children of their own: Ermintrude "Minty" and Hayden. Gitta is almost fluent in English now. Jo, who followed his brother to the University of Leipzig, has stayed behind in Germany and begun courting a Swiss girl named Andreina, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. He writes to his family about her, and everything looks promising - except they hope he doesn't go the way of his Uncle Owen, who at this point has become a cautionary tale.
Titus and Nora had three sons in the last five years: Marinus, Matthias, and Sherman. They have not been named nearly as biblically as Nora was. Titus also found work as a mathematics chair at Oxford University. This part of the Priddy family lives in Oxford, not London.
Rowland Blanchet, the ex-husband of Hester Sosa, recently wed a wealthy English girl of Dutch extraction, Sabrina Dirix. She bore a son, Oskar, five months into the marriage - an echo of Hester's hasty wedding to him. She knows Sabrina was used as a bargaining chip for her family, and admittedly fears for her.
