Gris and Henry had been moving from city to city all over Wales when they found Lord Shelby. They saw his head in a crowd of people on a busy street. And he saw them, too. Gris and Henry were getting old and they wanted to go back to Nat and Eira's estate, so they decided to poison him.
They bought deadly poison that could be absorbed on contact with skin. Then, they let themselves be found by only Lord Shelby but not his bodyguards. They sent him a letter and signed it as Peter Sosa, asking him to meet at Gris and Henry's address.
Lord Shelby showed up. As soon as he realized it was Gris and Henry, he started chuckling. He didn't know why they had turned themselves in, but he didn't care.
That's when Gris threw the vial of poison at him. But it had no effect, other that giving him a bunch of glass cuts. They'd been tricked. The poison was just colored water. Lord Shelby, furious, took out his dagger (because it's totally normal to carry around a dagger...) and backed them into a corner by the pantry.
Henry, desperate, started pelting him with food. Lord Shelby thought this was hilarious. He laughed and laughed and laughed.
Until a berry went in his mouth and he went into anaphylactic shock and passed out. He died an hour later.
And that was the end of Lord Shelby. His bodyguards would have avenged him, but they didn't like him very much and they lost motivation and went home and had a cup of tea. Esme had no way of knowing it was Gris and Henry who killed him, so she went home and had a cup of tea. Henry and Gris went back to Eira and Nat's estate to retire, unrecognizable in old age, and pretended to be Henry and Silvia Townsend.
Molly and Leo have added to their family, welcoming two daughters and a son. Cristiana and Hermine died shortly after being born. Hugo cheers them up somewhat, but he's not two daughters, and they're very sad. Gideon married a visiting French gentlewoman, Beatrix. He's now living in Normandy with Beatrix and their daughter. Anna was almost married, but not. Nat and Eira were considering betrothing her to a rich merchant, Stephan Cremonesi, when she was 18. Nat was all for it, but Eira was very hesitant. Eventually she decided against it. Nat grudgingly agreed. Then, Eira died. Nat was devestated, but Eira or no Eira, he was responsible for his daughter's well-being, and this really was best for her. But Anna hated her fiance when she met him. He wasn't a terrible person, but he was dull, and she didn't love him, and she wasn't ready to get married and have eight kids. Anna argued and begged and pleaded, but Nat would not let her break it off.
So Anna ran away. She stayed with Molly and Leo and worked as a seamstress. Her fiancé was angry. Like, furious. He had never been this angry when Nat saw him, and he regretted betrothing her now. Nat apologized to Anna, and she moved back to the estate.
Noelle has married a church composer, Matthias Sneijder. They have twin daughters, Ali and Andrina, and Noelle has learned to play piano and harp and her head is full of music and she's happy.
Becky and Gilead haven't had any more kids. Becky thinks Cilia is enough of a handful. Rachel married another farmer, Emerens, and they have a son and a daughter.
Kale met a gentlewoman, Ida Wagner. He was a farmer's son and she was a society lady, but they were in love, so they got married.
