I feel pretty neutral toward it. It seems to be much more common in the UK than in the US, so it's likely to have a British association for Americans. Some people will probably consider it pretentious for that reason, if you live in the US.

Alistair and Alastair are both very handsome. I would consider using one for a middle name.

I love the name, it's so handsome and distinguished. I slightly prefer the Alastair spelling.Before I headed up to Edinburgh, to attend university, I'd only ever known one (my mum's friend has a son named Alastair). However, I've come across another four in just my first term - all of them Scots - two with each spelling. I also know an Alasdair at uni, which is the original form, and that's actually my favourite form of the name.
