I'm glad you're not influenced by people you have met, but I find often on this board people will focus purely on how popular something is perceived to be as opposed to any other feature.
I too have been guilty of that in the past, but I'm now trying to focus on the sounds, history, associations/connotations as opposed to just how popular something is in the US.
