I can't imagine how, or why, anyone would consider it an improvement on Christian. It just looks dyslexic.

Someone I know has a Polish background and she chose it. Her husband has a French background and the child's last name in French.

That makes some sense; but if they are likely to spend their lives in an English-speaking society, it will always look like something frivolous rather than meaningful.

That's interesting. Do you think it's because you're educated when it comes to names or do you think (most?) people would be able to tell from the spelling?

Probably knowledgeable, plus I grew up in DC which has a pretty diverse population.

I couldn't have pegged it as Polish in particular, but it definitely looks foreign, rather than creative, to me.
I think I'd have assumed it was foreign even if I wasn't into names, but I'm not sure. It might be because I know there are a jillion spellings of Kris-names in different languages.

I agree with you and it will be misspelled all the time.

It's a little weird. I saw it and thought of Kristen, which is normal, but when I sound it out...the first syllable sounds like Christ to me, which is unusual for English names, and I'd find that a little off putting, at least when first seeing it.
But then, I don't like Christian either.

Yeah, I think it's like "kris" but I definitely read the y as an "ai" sound on first instinct.

I even speak a little Polish and it didn’t occur to me. It looks like one of THOSE names. You know, somebody wanted to name their daughter Christian, but they were concerned about its history as a mostly masculine name and its commonness. So instead of finding an actual uncommon, feminine name, they added a bunch of Ks and Ys to prove they were unique and creative. Ugh.

I don't like Krystian, but I like the female variant Krystiana. That was the name of a kid in my high school and I liked it (although it took me a while to figure out it wasn't Christiana-- I like that too, but Krystiana has an edgier look).
