Jia Lan will be a Julia in school, both because it's similar to her Chinese name and because Ellen and Jim admire St. Julia of Certaldo--and Jia Lan liked her story. At home, her siblings have taken to calling her Jiji.
Choosing a name for Heng Huan was more difficult, because it didn't immediately remind his parents of an English name. Because a sound-alike choice didn't seem like it would work, they told him stories of saints and important Biblical characters to see which he found most appealing. He liked St. Francis Xavier a great deal and was especially excited when Jim and Ellen told him that Francis Xavier was the patron saint of China. So Francis Xavier (he insisted on the full name) he is--Frankie for short.
Wei Wu has entered the family well--he's a friendly cat and gets along well with Daisy Pop, the family mutt.
