[Surname] Meaning of name Woltjen
Hi I was wondering if anyone knew the meaning of the name Woltjen. It is my great grandfather's name, who adopted my grandfather. My great grandfather, Herman Woltjen's parents were from Germany. I found there are many Woltjens from Bremmen Germany.
I have found that Wolt means forest. I can't find what the jen part means. I also wonder if it may not be originally a Danish name.
I look up jen and can find nothing. I have also seen the name as Woltjer.
Thanks.

The name is Wöltjen and it's derived from Wolter, a variant of Walt(h)er whose origin you'll find at tinyurl.com/y6jwsz82.
Thank you very much
-jen (also spelled -gen or -chen) is a German diminutive ending (making things smaller and more likeable).
While Wold is indeed a low German word for forest, it is not necessarily the source of the name. Much more likely is the Germanic name element wald "to rule, to lead" also present in the given name [Walter].

Would you happen to know how it is pronounced? My grandfather had a joke that Woltjen is pronounced with the T silent like the P in swimming.

Thanks!
