Venice, as a jewel of Western culture, has often considered itself apart from everyone else. Even the emerging creative wellsprings of Florence and Turin had Venice thumbing its nose, resting comfortably amid its lagoons, the canals weaving sapphire water throughout in a crystalline web under the dazzling sun. This isolation born of arrogance and conceit came to an end, however, like all good things: the plague reemerged. Trade with the East was halted, and the city quarantined. People lived in fear - a pair could walk down the street only for one to fall into the canals, dead, without warning. The constant change made the citizens feel as though their newfound peace was being ripped away, but they had no tangible person at whom to direct their anger. It wasn't as if they were about to shout at God.Maria, Lorenzo's wife and the mother of his four children, was extremely apprehensive. For the first years of the outbreak they had assiduously avoided conception, but eventually she became pregnant once more and feared for both her life and that of their unborn child. When they had married, Lorenzo had heard much court gossip (that he knew he was supposed to hear) that Maria's constitution was delicate and unsuitable for wifely and motherly duties. But as was characteristic of her city, Maria had thumbed her nose at the speculation, and soon her upstart husband had followed suit. So far, they had proven everyone wrong, with Maria becoming a mother of four healthy children. But there was a plague now. It had even claimed apothecaries and doctors of physic. She was now vulnerable. What if she perished along with the bambino, or brought the plague into their home? What then?Lorenzo was Maria's rock - even as he struggled with the deaths of Carlo Coscio and both Bonifazio Zanelli and his wife, Lavinia. These were people who had helped him rise to his current station, who had bolstered him in his conflict with the Calzolai Dynasty... and now they were gone. He would have to cultivate relationships with Coscio & Zanelli's replacements.Time stands still for no man - or woman - and Maria went into labor. It was then that the midwife discovered she was carrying twins. After many hours of labor, Maria safely birthed identical twin boys, Antonio and Pietro. Luca, Damiano, and Andrea were ecstatic, but little Pia - though not upset at the birth, by any means - lamented that she still had no sisters. But it wasn't as though she lacked attention: she was Papa's princess. The plague finally passed in 1405, with the Giardiola family (including Signor Leonardo) stronger than ever.***Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381
