There are just too darn many variants! Caitlin used to be pretty and pleasant; now it's just one of the crowd.
I've heard Kay and Kate (or, no doubt, Cay and Cait) as nns and both are sadly overused. If necessary, I'd go for Katharine; or maybe even Katrina or Catriona.
