Wonderful story, but not a particularly pleasnt-sounding name. I prefer Elissa, but I'd enjoy meeting a Dido, just for the sake of knowing that there was one out there.

When the pop star had a big hit when I was in high school, we all thought it was a hoot how close her name was to “Dildo”. I guarantee you that teenagers these days would still make the connection.

Also, it’s so far outside pop culture these days that it would never affect naming, but does anybody else remember Fido Dido?

I adore Dido--I fell in love with the legendary figure when I first read the Aeneid in 10th grade. I would be surprised and utterly delighted if I encountered a modern Dido.

I love Dido! It caught my interest ever since I watched the movie 'Belle'.
However it does face many problems with associations like queenv stated, and I'm afraid most people would pronounce it like 'ditto', but I would be delighted to come across a Dido in real life. I think it's refreshingly 'New Age' sounding and chic.

Well, I think there was some kind of indie-rock or folk singer called Dido back in the 1990s. I don't know how well-known she (if it was a she) was but maybe some people would think of that?
However, add an l to Dido and you can see why it's a very poor choice in the US, and probably any English-speaking country.

It also sounds a bit like didy, a cutesy, old-fashioned word for diaper.

Ummmm......it looks awfully close to an English word for a sex toy. (By English word, I mean a word in the English language, not a word used specifically in Britain.)

Also, it looks awfully close to the word "dodo" which is a slang term for "stupid person."

Also, it makes me think of the word "diaper". That's because when my children were babies, and I talked baby talk to them, I used to call their diapers "diders". Of course, that's unique to me. I think.
