Well, Jack and I finally have another little girl! Ava Kate arrived on Christmas Eve (hence her name, since we didn't want to call her Christmas). Emma is absolutely over the moon, because as much as she loves her brothers, she's been hoping for a sister for a long time. She loves bringing pictures of Ava to school to show off to her friends, and she is always asking Jack or me if she can help out with the baby. She wants to know when she'll be old enough to babysit.
Now in fourth grade, Emma still loves school as much as ever. She's a straight-A student, and all of her classmates love her. She's also taken up playing soccer. She's not the best on the team, but she likes it and is having a lot of fun. She even scored a goal last Saturday!
The twins are now six and in the first grade. Their personalities are still very different: Hayden loves sports and is currently involved in baseball (well, T-ball) and swimming. He wants to take up football when he gets older; I, of course, am a bit hesitant about that one. Alec, on the other hand, has developed an ear for music. He especially loves the oldies - from the Beatles to the Rolling Stones to the Eagles - and pretty much everything else he hears on the radio. We started him in a guitar class and he's surprisingly very good considering how long he's been playing. He says he wants to try the drums next, but I don't think we'll be getting him a drum set.
Despite their differences, the boys are actually quite close, even more so after they started school. Their teachers say they like to stick together and that interacting with the other children is sometimes hard for them.
Our youngest son, Liam, is now almost four. He hasn't yet begun school but he has picked up a strange habit: everywhere he goes, he walks on his tiptoes. When Jack and I asked him about it, he said that he wanted to be more like his brothers, since he wasn't the baby of the family anymore. I don't think he has to worry about height, since he's pretty tall for his age.
With five young children and our careers at a high note, Jack and I needed all the help we could get. So we invited his mother, Kate (Ava's namesake), to come live with us. She was more than happy to oblige, as Jack's father just passed away and she could no longer maintain their house by herself. All of the kids adore Nana, as they call her, and she's been such a blessing to us. She picks the kids up from school in the afternoons and gives them a snack, she watches the baby while we're at work, and she insists on cooking us dinner every Sunday evening (and trust me, she's a good cook!).
