[Games] Royal Year Game
First, just a note that I definitely will post another round of the Renaissance congrats at some point soon! I'm away at Guide camp this weekend, but hopefully I'll have time to get it written up either before I go, or on Wednesday once I'm back from camp and my cousins have visited. This is mostly just a repost of my old royal year game, with a few tweaks here and there!Dice: http://www.brockjones.com/dieroller/dice.htmSet-upRoll d8 for your nation, or simply choose. The specifics of the nation might vary from time period to time period - i.e., Spain only came into existence in the 15th century, under Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon. This list of nations is largely based the nations that exist at the start of the game Europa Universalis IV, in 1444. The nations in brackets are ones which are formed a bit later.1: England, Scotland, Wales, or Ireland (Great Britain)
2: France, Brittany, Burgundy, Provence
3: Castile, Aragon, Portugal, Navarra (Spain)
4: Austria, Switzerland
5: Poland, Lithuania, Hungary
6: Sweden, Denmark, Norway
7: Ferrara, Milan, Mantua (Italy)
8: Muscovy, Novgorod (Russia)Note: there’s no option for Germany because in the 15th century there was no Germany, just a billion small nations who were all part of the Holy Roman Empire, many of which were theocracies, run by bishops.Name your starting couple accordingly - they can have as many or as few names as you like! They can be King and Queen, or Prince and Princess and heirs to the throne.Roll d12 for their hair and eye colours, or choose according to their nationality:Hair
1-4: brown
5-7: blonde
8-10: black
11-12: ginger/redEyes
1-4: brown
5-7: blue
8-10: green/hazel
11-12: grey/blackIf you wish, roll d100 for your monarch/heir’s popularity with the people - a roll of 75, for example, would mean 75% of the country approves of the monarch. IIf your popularity drops below 20%, roll d2. A roll of 1 means your monarch is executed, and their eldest son/child (depending on your inheritance laws) takes the throne - roll for their initial popularity. A roll of 2 means your monarch strikes a deal with those trying to depose them - they stay on the throne, their popularity increases to 30%, but they lose 10 000 from their treasury. Roll d20 for the revenue your monarch receives each year from taxation - each year, this is added to your treasury. Roll d20 again for expenses, which are subtracted from your treasury. If your expenses are greater than your revenue… good luck!Roll d100 again for their treasury - a roll of 25 would mean the country has 25 000 in their treasury. If your popularity drops below 20%, roll d2. If you go bankrupt, you can:
Marry a child off to an extremely rich but unpopular family within their nation. This leads to a popularity drop of 10%, but you will receive a financial reward. Roll d20 and 3 zeroes to see how much you get.
Negotiate with the banks for a loan - this gives you a lump sum of 30 000, but adds 2 000 to your expenses every year until your monarch dies or gives up the throne.
Increase taxes. You can increase your revenue to any value you like, but however much you increase it by, your popularity drops by double that value - i.e., an increase in revenue of 5 (000) would lead to a 10% drop in your popularity. Each year, roll d2 - 1 means you roll for a child event, 2 for a story event. If a child is unmarried by the age of 18, roll d3 for them each year - a roll of 3 means they get married. Roll for their spouse’s nationality and looks, and choose a rank for them. Roll d8 for anyone aged under 8 or over 60 - if you roll an 8, unfortunately they pass away. If your monarch dies without an heir, roll d2. If you roll a 1, your monarch’s spouse or a sibling takes the throne. If you roll a 2, it is taken by a rival faction. If the heir is under 16 when the monarch dies, their surviving parent (if they have one), or another relative will serve as a regent for them until they turn 16. If a spouse dies, their widow/widower can remarry at any time during the game.Child Eventsd12
1-8: a child is conceived
9-12: no child is conceived (roll for a story event instead, if you wish)If a child is conceived, d12:
1: miscarriage
2-6: girl
7-11: boy
12: multiplesIf multiples are conceived, d12
1-8: fraternal twins (roll d2 for gender, 1 for a boy and 2 for a girl)
9-11: identical twins
12: triplets (fraternal or identical)Names - d12. Roll for each first and middle name
1: A or B
2: C or D
3: E or F
4: G or H
5: I or J
6: K or L
7: M or N
8: O, P, or Q
9: R or S
10: T or U
11: V or W
12: X, Y or ZHair - d12
1-5: mother’s hair
6-10: father’s hair
11-12: in between, or randomEyes - d12
1-5: mother’s eyes
6-10: father’s eyes
11-12: in between, or randomChance of survival - d12
1-8: mother and child both survive
9-10: child dies, mother survives
11-12: mother dies, child survivesStory Events - d121: A child falls seriously ill (roll d2 - 1 they live, 2 they die)
2: One spouse is unfaithful (roll d3 - a roll of 3 means the affair results in a pregnancy, which the other spouse may or may not be suspicious of)
3: The harvests fail, and the people go hungry through the winter (your popularity drops by 10%, and your income by 2 000)
4: War is declared with another country (roll d2 - 1 you fail, 2 you succeed. If you fail, remove 5 000 from your treasury and 5% from your popularity. If you succeed, add 10 000 and 10%)
5: One of your children joins the church - this means they cannot (or at least, should not) get married or have children.
6: The country experiences a period of economic success (your popularity rises by 5%, and your income by 2 000)
7: A royal marriage is proposed - if you accept, your eldest unmarried child will be married (or engaged, if under 16) to the Prince or Princess of another country
8: Angry peasants storm the palace, making demands. If your popularity is over 50%, you can appease them without making any sacrifices. Otherwise, roll d2 - a roll of 1 means you lose 10 000 from your treasury, a roll of 2 means you lose 1 000 from your income.
9: There is an attempt on someone in the family’s life. (Roll d2 - 1 means it is an attempt on the monarch, 2 means it is an attempt on someone else. Then, roll d3 - 1 means they survive with no consequences, 2 means they survive but with physical or mental consequences, and 3 means they die)
10: An unmarried member of the family falls unexpectedly pregnant, or gets someone else pregnant. (Roll d3 - 1 means the pregnancy is hidden and the child given away, 2 means the child is kept but passed off as a relation such as a niece or nephew, 3 means the parents are forced to marry and raise their child. If you have no one unmarried of a suitable age, roll again.)
11: A group of rebellious nobles are caught plotting against the monarch - how they are dealt with is up to you.
12: Some of your debts have been paid off and your expenses drop by 2 000.

DW [17]: Anne Elizabeth Louise, Queen of England [blonde hair, brown eyes]Popularity: 24%
Revenue: 3,000 coins
Expenses: 1,000 coins
Treasury: 45,000 coinsAt the tender age of eighteen William became the King of England upon the death of his tyran father, which was blessing and curse at the same time. The old King George left William with a country in decay, the family's popularity at its all time low and with constant threats from the country's neighbours a heavy weight has been left on the young king's shoulders and that's not where the bad news for William ended. The notoriously noncommital young man had to marry, the choice fell on the younger daughter of a well known merchant Anne, she wasn't thrilled with the union, but loved the idea of becoming a Queen and agreed with the marriage, although no one really asked for her opinion and the agreement was already made by the young King and her father.Year 1511DH [20]: William Arthur George, King of England [black hair, blue eyes]

After 30 years of his father's iron rule, the people are relieved to hear that René is cheerful, artistic, and far more open to reform. True, he's rather shallow and clearly manipulated by his wife, Catherine, but the people would rather a weak but generous king than a strong, unyielding one.
