a question about Melilot for Arcadia, Claire or any French people
For French names ending in -ot..
I'm confused by the differences among Charlot (m), Margot (f), Charlotte (f), and Melilot (f) with regard to gender and endings. Are they actually different depending on gender, or is it arbitrary?
Why is Charlot masculine and Charlotte feminine, while Margot isn't Margotte? Is Margotte or Melilotte plausible in French, or just wrong?

Names like Margot (ending in -ot for a girl) are exceptions. Normally a guy will have -ot ("o") and a girl -otte ("ot"). The name Margotte exists, but haven't been used since Middle Ages. It would sound very old dated to a French person, but not ridiculous at all.
Normally, if you see a French name ending in -ot or -otte it's very easy to guess if the person is male or female. Jeannot is male, Charlotte is female, Charlot is male, Lotte is female... It's the same with -ent and -ente, -et and -ette, -ien and -ienne... Female names tend to end with a -e or a -a.
As for Melilot, I guess it's ok since it comes from the name of a flower, and a flower is "feminine" enough, so they didn't need to feminize the name. I've never heard of a Melilotte, but who knows... Melilot is very rare too.
I also wanted to say that Melilot is not prn. Me-lay-lo. In French, a "i" can only give a sound like in "Inge", "yell", "image"... No "ay", no "hey!", no "bed", and so on...

Urhg. I'd forgotten that these are LOTR names. That takes away some of the charm for me, as real-people names. Although they're not nearly as well associated as, say, Arwen or Aragorn.

I suppose you might or might not spell it Melilotte. Either way you spelled it, some French people would probably be annoyed - either because Melilotte is "made up," or because you're pronouncing the T in Melilot. I googled Melilotte and got the screen name of an auction bidder (in Dutch), and the title of an operetta.. so it's not totally unprecedented.
:sigh: I like that name Melilotte..
I guess it's a shade too fanciful for me to use on a real kid though. I'd be excited if someone else used it though.

Anyway... I like Melilot. Marimas seems like a good name for a fantasy character, but otherwise its nms.

Melilot was used in France until the 19th century or something. It is the name of a flower and is prn. may-lee-lo. I'm not a fan of it. Merimas is nmsaa.
