[Opinions] WDYTO Margaret?
I woke up the other day with the name Margaret in my head. I have always liked it as a middle name, but I am starting to dig it as a first name. My default combo would be Margaret Pearl. What nicknames?

I love Margaret, but I really dislike the nn Maggie. Meg is cute for a nn tho, a la Little Women

Margaret means Pearl, so I wouldn't use Pearl as a middle name.Anyway, I like Margaret. My husband and I always planned on naming our firstborn Margaret - Margaret Mae or Margaret Cecilia. It didn't feel right by the time I became pregnant and we ended up going with Miriam.

I'm starting to warm to it, especially Meg, as a NN. Meg is very cute.Do not care for Margaret Pearl. The sound of it is a little off.

It’s my name.I go back and forth on how much I like having it. I like that it’s old and well used but not too common on women my age and I like that it’s not very feminine and sort of ugly sounding. In theory! Sometimes I wish I had a more modern or feminine sounding name. I think it’s more stylish today though than when I was born (1997) and objectively it’s not a bad name. I go by Maggie, which I also vascilate on. Sometimes I think it’s cute and friendly, other times too childish and it does sound like maggot. I’m fond of Greta.

As a Margaret nn Maggie, I agree 100% on everything you said.

As a Margaret, I'm a little biased. I go by Maggie, but I definitely prefer like Mae.

I haven't read any of the other replies, but I feel compelled to let you know right off the bat that Margaret Pearl is etymologically redundant (Margaret comes from the Greek word for pearl). That aside, Margaret is one of the few classic names that I have never been able to "get behind," so to speak. The way I say it, Margaret has 2 syllables instead of 3, and the final syllable sounds like "grit." It is a very unattractive sound to my ears, unfortunately - though the French Marguerite is quite pretty. (I guess there's a lot to be said for drawing out the end of the name.)Margaret isn't "pretty," but feminine names don't always have to be "pretty." I perceive the Margarets of the world to have their heads fastened securely to their shoulders and backbones firmly straight.

I like it, but not the nickname Maggie or Peggy. Elegant and Vintage

I love and support Margaret whole-heartedly.

Hi !!!I love the combo Margaret Pearl because they have the same meaning!I dislike Margaret alone. I prefer Margherita that in Italian also means "daisy".

Hey there! :)Actually, "same meaning" is the reason we tend to AVOID combos like Margaret Pearl. You're basically naming her Pearl twice.

hon, I think it's your default bc Margaret MEANS pearl. lol don't worry, though - I used to love Anna Grace as a combo, and as we all know Anna means grace. :)Anyway, I'm starting to like Margaret in the fn slot, too, though the only nickname I like out of it is Meg. (other ones like Peggy and Marge are really dated to me)Some other combo suggestions:
Margaret Abigail
Margaret Avery
Margaret Brianna
Margaret Brooke
Margaret Caroline
Margaret Cassandra
Margaret Cecilia
Margaret Chloe
Margaret Dakota
Margaret Eleanor
Margaret Evelyn
Margaret Isabella
Margaret Jasmine
Margaret Jessica
Margaret Julia
Margaret Lily
Margaret Naomi
Margaret Natalia
Margaret Olivia
Margaret Phoebe
Margaret Quinn
Margaret Savannah
Margaret Sierra
Margaret Zoe

I know a lot of people love it but I’ve always found it dowdy and old-womanish.

As others have noted, Margaret Pearl is a little silly because Margaret comes from the Greek word for "pearl." The combo certainly sounds lovely, though.Margaret's fine by me, but I strongly prefer Marguerite and Margalit, two of my favorite names.

Margaret sounds rather dry to me, and I don't like the Margaret Thatcher association. I like Margot, though.

Margaret Pearl is ridiculous, but Margaret is a name I've always loved and would have used happily. In South Africa the default nn for Margaret (when there were enough Margarets for this to make sense) was Margie, with the g as in Gloria, not Gillian. And I dislike that intensely! Maggie is OK, Meg is too close to tired Megan, and Peggy just isn't natural any more. I once knew a Peggy who was just that - Peggy; no mn. And that worked just fine. I don't know why people seem to prefer Margot and Marguerite to Margaret!

Margaret is what I call a "handsome" name. I don't find it pretty, however, I do love several of its nns and would consider it as a mn (and have considered it as a mn with my youngest) for a dd. My mother was named Margaret Ellen Mae ("Margie"). The nns I like best are Meg and Daisy. I've even considered Marguerite Sophie with the nn Daisy although I'm not sure I'd actually go through with that.Margaret Pearl is sweetly old fashioned and very fitting due to the meaning.

I wouldnt do Margaret Pearl, that just means pearl pearl. I think Margaret is an old persons name. I prefer Marguerite nn Mari Margo, Meg

It’s boring. As are all the nicknames derived from it.

I quite like the name Margaret, even if it’s on the dated side (at least where I live). I love Margarita and Margalit as well. My favorite nickname would probably be Meg, Maggie and Rita
