I like them both. I would prefer Mary if it had, say, about the same usage profile as Jane or Ruth. In fact I think it might even be my favorite name. But Mary was THE generic name forever and ever, and that makes it feel different than it would, if it were just another simple name that had become temporarily less fashionable. As it is, I am preferring Maria as a baby name - really only because it's a more fashionable style, and seems more prettier, more youthful, and more full of potential than Mary does. I like Maia. Maya reminds me of the concept (illusion of the world) and of Mayan culture, and Maia seems more like a personal name to me. I also like Maja (same prn), but that's probably because the only person I've ever known with this name, spelled it that way.

I don't like either, but if I had to, Maria. It's not quite as generic as Mary.

I prefer Maria to Mary, and both Maya and Maia to Maria, and Maia to Maya.
Maia > Maya > Maria > MaryBut they're all close enough to my own name (Mara), that I'd probably never use any of them.

I like both Mary and Maria, and both are family names. When naming our first daughter, we wanted to use our late mothers' names as mns: my mother had only one given name, and DH's mother (an Afrikaans woman) was Bertha Maria. We eliminated Bertha and decided that Mary would work better with the other names than Maria, so we used it successfully.I like Maia/Maya, but I'm a bit conflicted: I prefer Maya but it's so South American that I think I'd use Maia instead, if I had enough daughters.

Both are family names for me but I prefer Maria. Mary isn't a terrible name (like it doesn't sound ugly or anything) but it's plain and boring to me. Maya and Maia are nice, but I prefer Maya.

I prefer Maria. Maya looks childish and modern, and could be mispronounced as MAY-ə, while Maia is lovely, fresh, and Roman.

That's the pronunciation I was going for. Sorry, guess I should have specified. /:
