Message: "Avis" - Behind the Name

I was watching a British tv series based on a series of books by Ellis Peters. It is set in the12th century and about a mystery solving monk called Cadfael. One of the names that was used in an episode for a female character was Avis.

Does anyone think Avis is still usable as a name?

Probably better to use Avice, even though it looks unpleasantly like Avarice. But Avis ... what if she doesn't try harder?

I think it's because I've spent a lot of time at airports, but my immediate thought was the rental car company.

I like it and it seems usable to me.

I've known two Avises. One insisted on a pronunciation with the A sounding as it does in "cat." This never sounded right to me.

Avis would make a very nice name. It makes me think of birds, but I like the possible Norman meaning "desired." It makes a great alternative to Ava and has less pop culture associations compared to Mavis (which I also like).

Cadfael is a fun series. It is like medieval NCIS or Sherlock Holmes.

Usable? Definitely! There's tons of Av- names floating around - And I like Avis better than any of them.

Avis makes me thinks of birds which is why I like it :)

It is usable but I don't like it as a first name, as a middle name it would be better.
