Remember the song "My Sharona"? Well, even if you don't, what do you think of Sharona?

I might like it if not for the song!
I think the song is hilarious. I totally remember it. Catchy as hell, and just wonderfully godawful.I just now went and looked it up, and learned that it was written for a real person, who was at the time 17, and the songwriter was 25.
Yuck. And her photo on the single seems likely to be the other reason why the name never charted. And also, by 1979, I think the name was looking very dated-style. And still does, IMO. But not so much as Sharon does.I also ran across an interview with Sharona herself, who went on to become a real estate agent ...
And in the article it was said that in Japan, people who heard the song thought "sharona" might be a word for penis. lol!

Yeah, I was reminded of the song's existence by the fact that it was recently the subject of Tom Breihan's "The Number Ones" column on Stereogum, in which he writes about and rates every song that has ever hit Number One on The Billboard Hot 100. "My Sharona" hit Number One for six entire weeks starting on August 25, 1979. Breihan mentions the age difference and the "yuck factor" in his write-up, but nevertheless goes on to rate the song 8 out of 10.

“Never gonna stop/give it up/such a dirty mind/I always get it up/for the touch/of the younger kind”Just in case anybody wanted to feel MORE skeeved out about their age difference.I don’t think I’d like the heavy sound of the name even without the perverted but admittedly catchy song, tbh. It reminds me of names like Rhonda or Mona that feel unpleasant in my mouth and are still too dated for a comeback.

To be honest, in the summer of 1979, my guy-crazy then-19-year-old female friend LOVED the lyrics to "My Sharona". She even misinterpreted the lyric "Will you huh?" as something that I think is somewhat too gross to state here, but it was sex-related, making the song, in her mind, even more skeevy than it was.

I didn't think of the song when I just saw it in the subject line, but either way...I don't like the sound. I don't like Rona / Rhona either. I think Rhonda, Sharon, and Ramona are better.

All I can think of is the song. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and wow is the cover photo '70s tacky, not to mention problematic if she's still 17.

It reminds me of Mr. Monk's nurse/assistant. It is dated but not awful. I may be the minority, but I prefer Sharon.

I can only think of the song, but I like it better than Sharon

Dangit now it's in my head!!!I actually met a Sharona recently. ...it's not a bad name... if it weren't for that song.I still really love just plain old Sharon tho. Sharona doesn't have the floral quality.

I've never heard the song, and I don't think Sharona is much on an improvement over Sharon. It doesn't look like the form of the biblical name but rather the trendy (or ex trendy) prefix Sha- with Rona tacked on to honour a Ronald.
