I've never really thought about Rene or related names as masculine, perhaps because the first (and only notable) person I've known who it belonged to was a woman, however hers was spelled Renée. The more I consider it though, it is kind of nice. The only thing is that for me, seeing it without the accent on the second syllable kind of throws off the pronunciation; it's just not as intuitive so I feel more doubtful about what the proper way to say it is. I think it could do very well as a middle name since it goes so well with many things.
