Don't like it

It’s interesting. I personally wouldn’t use it. I agree that it gives off a gothic/mysterious and maybe even villainous vibe.

I love it because of its Gothic aura. :)

I adore the name but my aunt has named EVERY cat she has ever owned Elvyra and ruined my love for the name.
I mean picture a larger fluffy orange/white/yellow cat named Elvyra and tell me it doesn't make your head hurt...

I don't dislike it. I wouldn't look twice at meeting a female of any age named Elvira. But I'd shorten it to Vera.

I love the character in Blithe Spirit! Though as a name, I prefer Ruth. Not sure about Goth: to me, influenced by Noel Coward because I've never met one, Elvira seems, not quite upper-class but certainly Old Money.

I agree, it sounds like the name of a vaguely malicious vampire wearing an extravagant red dress who invites you for a sumptuous dinner on the opposite sides of a very long table, but who doesn't touch the meal and then implores you to stay the night only to murder you viciously.

It sounds very dowdy and dated to me.

First thought: “Elvira - Mistress of the Dark”. It may be why it sounds like vampires to so many of you.

It definitely has a dark, gothic, Victorian feel to it. A bit like Lenore can’t really escape the Poe/Raven association.

I used to find it too frilly, pink and princessy but it’s growing on me.

I like it, it's a popular name here and doesn't sound gothic at all to me.

I like it. I wouldn't use it due to the campy namesake, but I would love to meet one.
