Today's name of the day is James. WDYT?
James has to be one of the most ubiquitous masculine names - together with all its variants, it must be tied with John and all its variants. Even though its popularity on the physical graph (for the U.S.) looks like it's declining, it's still the #4 baby boy name; and ever since SSA data started being collected on names, it has never left the Top 20.
I like the full name well enough. Jamie is all right, as a nickname. However, I cannot stand Jim / Jimmy at all, that that is what used to make me dislike the name James. As it stands, though, it's so common that it feels like a name placeholder sometimes.
That said, I absolutely dislike James for a girl. I'm not even a big fan of Jamie on a girl, though I guess I can see the appeal.

I love it, it’s one of my favourites. I would definitely consider using it if there wasn’t already one in the family.

Personally I love Jim / Jimmy, but I'm not sold completely on Jamie. I prefer Jay over Jamie.

It's very much of an everyman name. I would never use it due to its dullness, but I don't mind its popularity and understand it fully - it has a pleasant sound, many nickname options, and a myriad of famous bearers.

I love James, and though I don't think it needs a nn, I'm fine with Jamie. Jim is a bit abrupt, but one of the nicest cats I've ever had was a Jimmy, so I'm fine with that too. Unlike many less classic popular names, James has earned its position IMO.
James on a girl should be too silly to mention. Especially since the delightful Jemima is waiting in the wings ... I know there's no connection. but most people don't, and they really do sound similar enough.

Mostly it's just boring and normal, like John.
When I consider whether or not I like it as a name, the answer is no - it's too smug sounding.

I'll likely use James if I ever have a son to honor my grandfather, though likely as a MN (I know, I know) as my family already has loads of various Jameses (cousins James "Jimmy" and Jamie, uncle James "Jim", and my grandfather was James "Jim" named after an uncle James "Jim" of his own haha).
I'd never use James for a girl, or even Jamie (I'd just use Josephine if I needed to honor him; his MN was Joseph).

This is one of the most boring, lifeless names I can think of. A friend from elementary school recently named her son James Charles, and his last name is ANOTHER ubiquitous male name ending in "s" (beginning with "Th") -- I almost died of boredom on the spot (though I was happy for her etc. etc. etc.).

I like James with the nn Jamie. And I am going to go against the grain on here and say I do like James on a girl especially as a mn.

James is okay. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. I much prefer the nickname Jamie as a full name over James.

I like James fairly well as a FN, most I've known have been nice guys. I don't like it enough to use it, even if I didn't hate all the nicknames for it, but it's nice enough and, of course, a classic. But I cannot stand it as a middle! It is the least imaginitive MN in the world, it's as if the parents couldn't be bothered thinking up anything else. I realise that may not usually be the case as it could be honouring or the (non-namenerd) parents may think it sounds lovely with the FN but, to me, James feels like it has wasted a name spot when it's in the middle.
And on a girl- also no.
