It's a very sweet name, and needs to be more common. so Overall I like the name.

I think it’s lovely. I adore opals though and find it quirky, but still usable and acceptable for a name. I think it would age well too. I’d definitely consider it.

For some reason I can only picture it on a cat. Is there a cartoon cat named Opal? Or maybe someone I knew had a cat Opal when I was younger...

I'm not a big fan of gemstone names, but I love the name Opal. I agree that it's elegant, as well as classic and pretty.
