[Opinions] Jolie
WDYT? I used to have two students with this name. They would both be 8 now.

It sounds juvenile and somewhat hillbilly to me, like Jolene. Plus, the Angelina Jolie association doesn’t help.

I prefer Julie or Joline/Joleen. I’m a bit bothered by “Jolie” meaning pretty, if the girl turns out to be not very conventionally attractive.

It seems very fakey-fake French. It would be like if the word “Pretty” suddenly took off as a name in non-English-speaking countries. It’s kind of cheap and flimsy and lacking in historical context to ground it.I know Angelina Jolie’s mother was French, but that doesn’t mean she had good taste or is an authority on French names.

Bella feels a bit like that to me as Italian , though at least it can be considered a nickname/derivative of Isabella? Still it’s as if Beauty or Beautiful became a name.

It’s okay. Similar to Julie or Josie.
