Grusha had been suffering from depression and turned to alcohol to cope with her misery. Irina’s main reason for joining the exchange program was to get away from her parents’ problems.
Just after the earthquake two years ago, Vladimir finally left Grusha for one of his many lovers. After trying to cope with the abandonment for several months, Grusha tragically took her own life. Irina had been an only child, and she had no other family to turn to. No one will be waiting for her when her time in the program ends.
Unwilling to go back, Irina begs Edmond and Teodóra to let her stay with them longer. Not only do they agree to do so, they decide to become her adoptive parents. Irina sheds the “Vladimirovna” part of her name, to show that she is eager to embrace her new family.
