[Opinions] WDYT of Ada?
I've always loved the name Adelaide but I'm digging Ada lately as either a nickname for Adelaide or as a standalone name. However, I'm concerned it would just be constantly confused with Ava.I recently found out my great-great-grandmother's middle name was Ada (Catherine Ada) and while it would not be in honor of her, I was struck by how it livened up the name Catherine. Catherine/Katherine is a truly tired name in my family. I have 5 Aunts by birth or marriage, sister, sister-in-law or first-cousins of my father (who are considered Aunties to me in how my family works and as close as my Dad's sisters and sisters-in-law to me) named Catherine/Kathryn/Katherine/Catherine/Catherine. Also, a first-cousin named Katherine and a child of one of my father's cousins named Catherine "Kate" (considered a "cousin" in family parlance), and it's well represented in the family tree for generations. I also graduated Catholic high school in a class of about 150, males and females, and there were 7 Katherines (3 went by Katherine, the others were Kate or Katie). Therefore, super boring to me but I thought Ada spiced it up and that was a surprise to me.So questions:- WDYT of Ada?- Do you prefer Adelaide with Ada as an occasional nickname or Ada as a standalone name?- Do you think Ada would always get confused with Ava, especially on a child born in the next 5-7 years? And do you think that would be a problem? By 'problem', I mean burdensome to constantly correct or any other perceived problem you might think of.- What do you think of Adelaide Mary Jann or Adelaide Jann Mary, with both Jann and Mary being honoring? Which one do you prefer?- WDYT of Adelaide Claire Annette or Adelaide Annette Claire? Annette and Claire are also honoring. Which do you prefer? Thanks!

WDYT of Ada?
- I love it! My maternal great-great-grandmother (I think that’s right!) was named Ada Florence and I LOVE that combo, it’s my fave Ada combo. Then my paternal great-grandmother was Ada Grace, which is also beautiful. So it’s used on both sides of the family tree and definitely a name I would consider using one day.Do you prefer Adelaide with Ada as an occasional nickname or Ada as a standalone name?
- I think Adelaide is gorgeous too, so I prefer them as two separate names, giving each the love it deserves.Do you think Ada would always get confused with Ava, especially on a child born in the next 5-7 years? And do you think that would be a problem? By 'problem', I mean burdensome to constantly correct or any other perceived problem you might think of.
- No, I think people would get used to it quickly, because of its closeness to Ava. People have thought my DD’s name is Edith, instead of Eden, because that’s just what they think they hear! That’s happened a few times, but you just correct them and move on.What do you think of Adelaide Mary Jann or Adelaide Jann Mary, with both Jann and Mary being honoring? Which one do you prefer?
- Adelaide Mary Jann flows better, though I’m not super keen on Jann. -WDYT of Adelaide Claire Annette or Adelaide Annette Claire? Annette and Claire are also honoring. Which do you prefer?
- Adelaide Claire Annette definitely flows better out of the two combos, though again, not a huge fan of it in general.

Ada seems insubstantial to me. I prefer Adelaide "Ada" (or Adie)I don't think Ada sounds too much like Ava, the consonants are pretty different. I prefer Adelaide Mary Jann. "Adelaide Jann" is hard to say because J starts with a "d" shaped mouth, so the "d" in Adelaide totally disappears and it turns into Adelay Jann.
Personally I'd change Jann to a variant but it depends on how strict you want to be about using exact honoring names. I like how Adelaide Claire sounds. I wouldn't put Adelaide and Annette in the same combo though, they're not really similar but I still think they're too similar. If I had to pick one it would be Adelaide Claire Annette, even though it's basically "Adelaide Clarinet". (and if you used Mary Annette it would be marionette)Some ideas using variants:
Adelaide Claire Janette (double honoring for Jann and Annette?)
Adelaide Claire Maria
Adelaide Mary Jehanne
Adelaide Maria Jeanette
Adelaide Maria Jane
Adelaide Mary Jane
Adelaide Mary Claire
Adelaide Claire Mary
Adelaide Clara Joan
Adelaide Mary Joan
Adelaide Mary Netta
Adelaide Clara Jane
Adelaide Claire Jehanne

Thanks!I'm pretty true to honoring. My cousin is Claire Annette and it doesn't bother her or anyone else. I can't imagine explaining to my Auntie Jann that I named my child Adelaide Mary Joan but Joan is after her. Even though I like the name Joan! Even less so explaining to the two Marys in my life and my Auntie Jann that Adelaide Maria Jeanette was named after them.

I love how Ada sounds in English, even though I dislike it in my native language. I have a slight preference for Adelaide nn Ada, but it works well on its own. I don't think it would get confused with Ava. Jann is jarring, Mary is lovely, Claire and Annette are dull. My choices would be Adelaide Mary Jann and Adelaide Claire Annette.

I like both Adelaide and Ada. Adelaide and Ada were names I considered for my own daughter. I think Ada can work as a nn for Adelaide but Ada can definitely stand alone.Sure, some people will think they hear Ava but once corrected will get the name is Ada. If you really like the name, I wouldn’t let the popularity of the name Ava stop you from using it.I prefer Adelaide Mary Jann and Adelaide Claire Annette. Between those two I like Adelaide Claire Annette.

An aquiantance of mine named her second daughter Ada back in january (first daughter is Ella). I have to say that I don’t love any of them. To me, they’re a bit bland. Adelaide is pretty. I like better than Ada but I also perceive them as two different names.Ada might be confused with Ava but I don’t think it’s a problem.Of your combos, I prefer Adelaide Claire Annette and Adelaide Annette Claire. A. Mary Jann is better than A. Jann Mary.

I much prefer Adelaide to Ada. That wouldn't matter if you used Ada as a mn, but as a nn for Adelaide it just doesn't convince me. I don't think the Ava issue is important - the explanation is quick and easy, and both names are, let's say, real.
I find Jann ugly and unnecessary; Jan could work just as well to honour anyone named Jann, and if Jann is a nn (my ex-BIL is married to a Janet who goes by Jann) then I'd rather honour its owner by using her actual name, whatever it was. I prefer Adelaide Mary Jann for the rhythm.
Adelaide Claire Annette is lovely. Both mns are good, but I prefer the rhythm of Claire Annette. That would be my choice.

Jann is the actual name and spelling of who I'd want to honor. She also finds the name 'ugly' and the extra 'n' unnecessary but she's fairly pragmatic and only ever wished for her middle name to be her first name except my youngest Aunt has that as a fn and so it would seem I was honoring her instead of Jann. Her middle name is "prettier" and I find it more appealing but I want to honor Jann and my youngest Aunt. Considering she always didn't like her fn, I think picking something somewhat related would reinforce that and dilute the association I want.

Ada is lovely and sweet. It's just distinct enough from Ava to be pleasant.I suppose I prefer Adelaide, but I'm pretty much neutral. No I don't think it would always be confused.Umm I guess I like Mary Jann better. Jann is very awkward. Mary is very beautiful to me.Does Clarinet bother you? Because Claire Annette flows really well, but Annette Claire is also pretty and interesting.

Lol Clarinet doesn’t bother me! It’s actually my cousin’s fn/mn combo, with Annette after Nana, and we call her “Clarinet” as a nickname haha. She chose to be a flautist though ;)Jann is awkward but she’s one of my favorite Aunts, always has been, but she’s really been one of the only family members who checks in on me and thinks of me in the past few years. She doesn’t have kids to pass on her name and she’s super special and has always disliked her fn so I don’t want to use another version. She doesn’t dislike her name to the point that she wouldn’t be very honored for a hypothetical kid to have it as a mn for her though!

Ada’s nice, a little unsubstantial as a first name but very cute as a nickname.I don’t think it would be confused with Ava if it was pronounced “A-da”. If it was pronounced “AY-da”, then it would definitely need constant correcting.Adelaide Mary Jann flows nicer than Adelaide Jann Mary. Though, Adelaide looks a bit strange next to much simpler Jann and Mary.Adelaide Claire Annette is beautiful.

It would be pronounced AY-da because I am native to one English speaking country and live in another English speaking country. I'm not European, nor do I speak any Germanic or Scandinavian languages so it would be odd for me to insist on the A-da pronunciation, even though I like it very much!Thank you for your reply!

I think if I knew it was short for Adelaide I might assume it was A-da, but if I just saw Ada on its own I'd assume it was AY-da.

Thank you!In that case, WDYT of Ada Claire Annette? Do you prefer it to Adelaide Claire Annette?

I like Ada as a standalone name, don't like Adelaide at all. I don't think it would be a problem re the Ava/Ada issue
I prefer Ada Mary or Ada Claire
I prefer Adeline/Adele to Adelaide

Thanks for your reply but I didn't ask about combinations with one middle name because it's family tradition to use 2 middle names, which is why I put forth combos with two middle names (although it's totally fine for someone to substitute Adelaide for Ada in the combination if that's your preference). I also didn't ask what other Ad- names you prefer to Adelaide. It was strictly about Ada, Ada as a nickname for Adelaide, and Adelaide. I don't like Adeline or Adele enough to use, which is why they weren't included in my post.

Thank you :)I really appreciate your reply! I like Ada Mary Jann too- initially when I threw those honoring names together, I wondered if it would be clunky but I'm starting to like it.

Not too clunky, flows great too
