It is definitely old-fashioned, but medieval? I don't really think so.
Mentioning Emma in connection with it makes me think of that weird meme "Ermagurd!" meme a few years ago. Irma/Erma actually does kind of sound like someone with a speech impediment or really bad teeth saying Emma.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!
