Magus sounds a little more like a name, but even then, it is tied to a specific occupation (priestly caste of ancient Persia) and to magic.

Part of the reason Sage works better than Mage is due to the fact that Sage is more generic and is also a plant name while Mage is like naming a kid Witch or Sorcerer.
