I've been thinking about Norma a lot lately (probably because of Norma Shearer), and noisynora's thread from a few days ago prompted me to post about it. While I'm bothered by the name's proximity to "norm" and "normal," I find it so warm and even soothing. What do you all think?
Combos are challenging because ornate names tend to overwhelm Norma, but I'll try:

I actually really like it. It gives me the same warm feeling that Nora does, which HAS to be due to the similar sounds because my first thought, when I hear Norma, is Norma Bates from Psycho.
It sounds veeeery frumpy in Danish but I actually really appreciate that quality about it. Dusty, cobwebby, excentric, darling, old woman-ish.

Norma isn't on my list, but I do think it's a nice name. I've never given it much thought...maybe that's because my uncle's name is Norman and I'm not fond of him. As a note of interest, his wife/my aunt's name is Dorma.

My immediate association would be with Marilyn Monroe. Then the Elton John song, Candle in the Wind. So there is an air of sadness about the name, I think. Norma Shearer did give it a spunkier feel, though. And I do get the warm vibe you feel, too.

It's homely, sorry. Nowadays no one wants to be normal, it has even become a bit of an insult (=boring). I think it doesn't work these days. In the 50s people wanted to fit in, nowadays not so much. I think of a suppressed 50s housewife who had to bury all her dreams.
Norman, on the other hand, kind of works for me. But I don't think of "normal" when I hear it. Lorna works too.
