[Opinions] Daphne, Tamsin, Ruby or Lyra? (more)
Thanks to Billina for the idea for this thread :)I'm also wondering which one your favorite is and what you would pair it with. Comments on all names very much appreciated.

TamsinI don’t adore any of them but Ruby is a name I can’t deal with at all, and Lyra is too trendy. Daphne is okay.

LyraLyra isn't a favorite of mine, but it bothers me less than the others.
I'd rather Lyla or Lara.Daphne is pretty, but I don't like the daff sound.
Ruby is a nice image, but I don't like the oob sound.
Tamsin seems spunky and cool, but I don't like the Tam part, it makes me think of Tammy.

LyraI've never cared For Daphne, Tamsin is alright but certainly not enough to want to use it, same with Ruby although less so. That of course leaves Lyra which I actually really like.

TamsinDaphne is lovely, it's a close second. I enjoy the mythological association and warm, pleasant sound.
Tamsin is sounds calm and intelligent, it reminds me of moors and rainy days.
Ruby is tawdry and overrated, I strongly dislike it.
Lyra is too fantasy-ish, but has a nice sound.

Tamsin is dated and was never attractive.
Ruby is elderly, with scarlet lipstick that doesn't match her lips and a strident voice. Young Ruby people will grow up to be her.
Lyra, like Hermione, is burdened by the books. Lyra should make me think of musical instruments and constellations as well as Golden Compasses, but all I hear is Liar.
Which leaves dainty, sunlit Daphne. Lovely plant, lovely name.
Daphne Isobel
Daphne Claudine
Daphne Alice Hildagonda

DaphneI do prefer Ruby more, but I have a niece with that name, so couldn’t use it. Daphne is gorgeous too and a name I would consider using. Daphne Ruth or Daphne Jemimah would probably be my go to combos.

Daphne BerylI don't even like Beryl usually, but that's striking me as the ideal combo. I think Tamsin sounds best with my surname, but I hate Tammy and would avoid Tamsin to avoid the possibility. Tamsin Laurel, Tamsin Daisy, Tamsin Olivette?

Daphne or LyraI’ve never really liked Tamsin much, it’s always felt juvenile to me. I like Daphne and Lyra’s mythological origins. For Daphne, I would go with something like Daphne Odette or Daphne Reine. For Lyra, I would go with Lyra Sylvie or Lyra Selene.

Lyra for a "cool/blue" option, Tamsin for a "warm/brown" option. I love both but in very different ways. Lyra Sabriel or Tamsin Rowenna

LyraI don’t like Tamsin at all, Ruby’s a little too common for me, and Daphne’s okay but there’s just something I don’t like about how its spelled.

DaphneTruthfully, the only one of this group that I don't care for is Lyra. I've never been fond of the way it feels in my mouth when I say it. (It also reminds me of "liar.")Ruby is probably the easiest-to-bear gemstone name right now (I would've said Amber, but that has unfortunately garnered stereotypes), and is quite on-trend. That can be good or bad, depending on your popularity preference.Tamsin is fun. Apparently it's dated in the U.K., but I have never encountered a Tamsin in the U.S. (Tammy, yes, as well as Tamara. But never a Tamsin.) It would be a fresh choice here.Daphne is my favorite, though. I used to dislike it because it reminded me of Daffy Duck, but that association has long faded. (Daphne on Frasier helped with this.) Also, I encountered some Daphnes in real life that let me see it was an elegant yet also perfectly normal name in everyday life.

TamsinFrom most to least favorite
Tamsin - Pretty, down to earth, and a name that I associate with nature and the color green. It is uncommon in my area but easy to spell. Daphne - Daphne plants smell wonderful. I like that there is a mythological association, but Daphne's story makes me mad. Apollo was a would be rapist and Cupid's arrows don't excuse that. Daphne's father's intervention was not helpful; however, Daphne herself was nice enough. Lyra - okay. It is less grating than Harper. The character of Lyra in the "Golden Compass" was nice enough, but Philip Pullman and his motivations when he wrote the series were problematic; he uses fiction to create one-sided and exaggerated arguments about things and people he hates rather than in support of things that he loves. The whole "My books are about killing God" controversy is minor potatoes in comparison to his mischaracterization and desire to stir up hate toward other people. Ruby - Names that are expensive stones and suggest a high monetary value sometimes feel oddly cheap. Brand names like Armani and Chanel have a similar feel. Conversely, Pearl and Jasper seem more symbolic of a virtue or religion, so they don't give off the high-dollar impression.

TamsinI like the look of Daphne as well, but not the sound. Maybe Tamsin Emmeline or Tamsin Isobel

TamsinAt one time I might have said Daphne. I've only ever met one Daphne and I always liked the name on her. I seem to be hearing it quite bit on the polls lately, though. So I've gone off of it just a bit.

DaphneI quite like Daphne. Next in order of preference would be Tamsin (though I strongly prefer Thomasin and, even better, Thomasina), Ruby, and Lyra, which I hate.As for combos, I'd probably opt for something like Daphne Isabeau, Daphne Melisande, Daphne Hortense, or Daphne Sibylla.
