What’s your opinion on the name Venus?
I kinda like it, it’s pretty and all. I would never use it because it’s not really my style, it sort of rhymes with p*nis, and that’s pretty much naming a child after a sex goddess. I’d give it a decent 6.5/10. What about you?

Venus, and planet names in general, seem a tad pretentious to me. Plus, the meaning isn’t too desirable. I give it a 4/10.

I don’t think it’s usable. It would be super awkward on a girl who turns out not to be conventionally pretty.

In German the vulva is also called "venus hill" so it has really sexual associations, in my opinion. It also makes me think of the razor brand and the tennis player. I don't find it very usable. And yes, it rhymes with penis and also vaguely reminds me of the word "vagina".

Also reminds me of penis. I don't mind the sex goddess thing, that's a good thing, but overall I'm giving it a 8/10.

i like it a lot! 9\10. kind of has sexual implications to some people and also has possibility to get made fun of, but it sounds very sophisticated.

I like Venus. It's the name of some nice songs, especially Venus by Frankie Avalon.
I also think of the shampoo adverts from the late 90s that used Bananarama's Venus. Faint memories and I probably only remember them because of VHS tapes, but they're strong enough for me to conjure up flashing images of an (apparent) naked woman showering and showing off her sleek, shiny hair whenever I hear Venus.
I too don't like the idea of naming a child something that means "love, sexual desire" so it's not a name I'd consider. Perhaps on a cat as a pet name instead.

It's trying too hard. Like naming a boy Adonis. I once knew somebody that had a cat called Venus; it's better suited for a pet.

I wouldn't use it either, but I know of a woman named Venus who attended the same school as me but many years previously! She died about 20 years ago at the age of about 90. I never saw her, but apparently she never married, was tiny and stooped, in later life anyway, and was a demon Scrabble player who dominated her local Scrabble club.
I think it's far too ambitious - more people are ordinary-looking or just plain plain than there are people resembling any kind of goddess, let alone Love And Beauty. And a really plain Venus ... it would seem cruel.
Funnily enough, a cousin of mine married an English woman whose birth surname was Venus. She had twin sisters and I think a brother, so the ln could potentially have been passed on to a new generation. It seems that it was originally a Norman French name; I don't know its origins. And I don't like lnfns either, though I did like my cousin's wife!

Can't say I ever thought of the rhyming thing before. It seems like a name that is hard to live up to, though. A goddess of love and beauty. I feel much the same about Romeo for boys. It's just too much
