Nell was delighted to live to see the birth of her first great-grandchildren, a daughter and a son born to Ralph and his wife, the daughter of a wealthy Italian merchant. She is equally thrilled by the wedding of Ruby to a charming young man of noble birth but rather limited means, and by Calliope’s growing renown as a violinist throughout England and even beyond, although she regrets the strange ideas about marriage that Rose and Patrick have imbued in her and wishes some gentleman or another would hurry up and propose. James and Mary have also had a second son - Mary is grateful for his company, as Cyrus is now serving aboard the ship of his father’s friend.

The past decade has seen a marriage, a death, and rather a lot of births for the extended Jarvis family. Margot’s passing was a source of great anguish to Prosper, who has become a physician against his parents’ wishes but was nonetheless unable to do more than ease her pain in her final weeks. He lives in London with Verity, Iestyn and their two young children; to his mother’s disappointment he has never married, but with the help of his sympathetic sister and brother-in-law maintains a clandestine relationship with another man, a clerk at a legal practice.
Letitia has married a young minister, and recently welcomed a daughter, whom Joy adores (much to William’s jealousy).
Mercy and Vincent have had two more children, a girl and a boy, who, to their mother’s distress, are frequent targets of the twins’ practical jokes and tricks.

Agnes sincerely hopes that all her children’s marriages will be happier than her own. Over the past decade, all of them have been wed (or at least engaged): John to the daughter of clan chief from the Borders, Jacob to a pretty local lass, Merry to an Edinburgh gentleman of some considerable means, Alexander to a widow with a daughter, and Augusta to a young Army officer. Magnus and Eilidh were the first to welcome a child, not so long after their marriage; Eilidh so hated the experience that she swore she would not have another, and so their daughter is the recipient of all their affection. John and his wife have had three daughters, Merry has borne two sons, and Alexander is learning to care for his wife’s daughter as his own.
