Help[Opinions] Duchess
So recently, somebody I know had a baby, and I found out the baby’s middle name is Duchess. The intention was apparently to honor her deceased grandfather, Duke, who died a few years before she was born. The feminine version of Duke, is Duchess. They thought Duchess as a first name was too “out there” so they put it as a middle name. So that’s interesting.
Anyways, what do you think of the name Duchess? Do you think it’s better suited as a middle name? Do you think it’s too “out there”? I would love to hear your opinions.

I would never harp on someone for trying to honor someone they love, but I could never personally put this name on a child. It is very firmly in the "pet/animal name" part of my brain.

Duchess is still a bit much for a middle name, but I guess it’s justified because of their situation. There was probably something else they could’ve else, but that’s cute.

Personally I think it's more of a title than a name, I wouldn't use it. Duchess is sort of like naming your daughter Princess.

Surely there was another name Grandpa had that they could use or modify.
Duchess sounds like a dog. Or like a not very nice nickname people might have for a spoiled, condescending woman.

Duchess is a terrible name, both as a first name and a middle name. Surely they could have used some other name to honor her grandfather.

How peculiar and funny! I would assume and hope that they did it with a little humor, because except for their singular situation, Duchess makes a really awful name for a person.

I’d say it’s too much for a middle name, but it is nice how they honoured the grandfather and it was quite clever.

That’s pretty interesting. I’m happy they chose it as a middle name, cause Duchess as a first name would be pretty damn strange IMO. Ther was probably something else they could use to honor Duke, but hey, each to their own.

All I can think is that Grandpa Duke must surely have had some other name that could have been used. I'm glad they made it a mn. Apart from that, all I can think of is the little black dog in Beatrix Potter who mistakenly believes she has eaten a mouse-and-bacon pie and/or swallowed a patty-pan.
Why do people, in a country where a war was fought to get rid of the English class system (inter alia, OK), use titles like Earl and Duke and I don't know what else, Princess? If they are trying for exclusivity, then they are falling flat on their faces. Very strange!
