Help[Opinions] Love the name, hate the nickname
Are there any names you would like, or even love, if it weren't for a terrible nickname putting you off?
For me, the queen of this category is Gabrielle. It's chic, sophisticated, refined without being too soft / delicate. French. It's almost perfect - it definitely fits with my aesthetic, at least. There's just one glaring problem: Gabby / Gabi. That gets a big fat no from me. Even if the epithet (gabby) isn't commonly used anymore, the sound to my ears is whiny, petulant, and just overall unattractive. And the really sad part is that Gabby feels inevitable because every single Gabrielle / Gabriella / Gabriela (the last one being the most common in my experience, particularly among Latinos) I've ever met has gone by Gabby / Gabi. None of them used their full name (likely because they thought it would sound pretentious). None even used Bree, which I find far more preferable (even though "brie" is a cheese, I know). So that takes Gabrielle off the table for me.
(Funnily enough, I'm quite fond of the "modern" creation Briella because it specifically avoids Gabby - and it's one of the few cases where I prefer the -ella option to the -elle one.)

I also love Gabriella and Gabrielle but not so much Gabby/Gabi. I don't have a huge aversion to this nickname but compared with the full name it's really not very attractive, and indeed quite difficult to avoid.
I'm sure I have many such names but here are some I can think of off the top of my head (I dislike the nicknames to varying degrees and I don't think they are always as inevitable as is the case with Gabby):
I love Adeline, Adelaide, Adele etc. but really dislike Ada and Addie. Same for Madeline vs Maddie.
I like Emily or Emmeline but not Em. I like Cordelia and Cornelia but not Corrie. I like Danielle and Daniel but not Danni/Danny or Dan. I like Gabriel but not Gabe (even more than Gabby). I like Michael but not Mike, and Raphael but not Rafe. I like Emmanuel but hate Manny. I like Jane but dislike Janie. I like Katherine but much less so Kate. I like Anna/Anne but not Nan or Annie. I like Felicity but not Lissy or Flick. I like Cecilia but not Cissy or Ceecee. I like Samuel but not Sam (I like Sam more for Samantha). I like Kevin but dislike Kev. I like lots of -lia names but not the nickname Lia.

I always tend to think of masculine names. Hate may be a strong word, but I strongly dislike.

Joseph. I've loved this name since I was a small child, but I hate all the nicknames. I also think it's too formal for everyday use so I'd never use it, lol.

I rather like Abigail, Abby seems inconsistent and childish. Frederick is handsome and sophisticated, Fred and Freddie are a bit inconsistent.

Hmmm... I really hate CeCe as a nickname for Cecilia. While I don't feel like that nn is inevitable, it does make my hesitate a bit.

I like Antonia a lot, but Toni is honestly just horrible as far as I'm concerned. There was a girl in the year above me at school who was Antonia nn Toni, and I just always felt it was a terrible waste of a name!

Hm, we are like opposites on that name. I like Gaby / Gabi more than I like Gabrielle. I also like Gabriela more than Gabrielle. Gabriella doesn't strike me as particularly French, the way Giselle or Gisèle does. Gabrielle is like Danielle - a standard English feminine form, IMO. It's Gabriel for girls (I don't mind Gabe either!). I'm not a fan of Briella - seems fluffy to me as a full name.
The queen of the category, for me, is Charlotte. Not that it needs a nickname. But Lottie and Charlie (f) I hate very much.

Christopher. It sounds so strong and wise; Strongly dislike the nickname "Chris"; it's bland and characterless.
Alexandra. Far too pretty of a name to be unused [except for when filling out a job application] and replaced by nicknames like "Lexi" "Xandra" "Allie". Yuck.

I agree with Christopher. I like that name, but I really dislike Christian, Christine and Christina and Chris just encompass too many disliked names lmao
I also like Crystal and I'm also wary of that being shortened to Chris xD Though Krissie is a little preferable
Love Alexandra and I admit, I do like nearly every nickname for it, especially Alex and Xandra, but Allie? Nooooo thank you. I have the same issue with Alexander and Al :V

I'm not fond of Mel, though I do like Melody and Melissa
I prefer Addy over Maddy, but I prefer Madison over Addison
Not fond of Ellen, but I otherwise really like Eleanor. Ellie I do prefer a lot, but it is far, far, FAR too overused.
I don't like Theo. But I like Ted / Teddy for Theodore. It's just a given for Theo to end up being my little boy's nickname, however (Ted / Teddy nn for Theodore isn't as common in the UK, it's often short for Edward instead. It just won't be the go-to)
I think Alfred is one of the worst offenders for me. While I don't like Alfred that much, I just hate Alfie and I don't know why
Well... I'm not sure if I'd get the Willy issue tbh, especially with how popular Bill / Billy is as a short form of William / Wilbur / Wil-whatever, but it does concern me lmao
