Personally, all I can think of is the purple dinosaur. It doesn't help that my second association is the drunkard from The Simpsons or that my third association is the womanizing creep from How I Met Your Mother. While Barney is not a bad name, I would opt for Barnaby because it has less baggage.

I love it! I don't even think of the dino anymore, cuz I never really watched that show. We loved the Andy Griffith Show, so I just think of the greatest man of all time, Barney Fife. I think it works for Barnaby, also Barnabas, Barnard, Bernard, Bernadette :)

The first thing I thought of was Neil Patrick Harris' character Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother. While the show has a huge fan base, I'm not sure that's a character you want to name your kid after.

In the US, it's almost a joke name, very dated and heavily associated with Barney Miller and Barney Fife and of course, the world's most irritating purple dinosaur.
You never see it anymore except sometimes on dogs.

I do kinda like Barnbaby by itself, but not enough to use it. Barney is terrible, even as a nickname.

I think it's cute, but I would only consider it as a nickname for Barnabas / Barnaby.

There was a Barney in one of the baby groups I took my son to. I don’t like it - prefer Barnabas.
