Oh, I didn't know it was never popular in the US. It was popular enough that it seems slightly dated to me (though not as much as
Brittany seems dated).
I like it, seems spunky. The one I know was born in 1990 and all her siblings have biblical names.
The vibe I get is a little like
Naomi +
Annabel ÷ 2.
Or
Elizabeth +
Brittany ÷ 2.
Or
Rebecca +
Kathleen ÷ 2.
Maybe it was only moderately popular because it was competing with uber popular names like
Elizabeth (which was more traditional/familiar) and
Brittany (which was more fashionable/trendy).
Bethany was the more obscure religious option and/or quirkier one of the group.
