[Opinions] Arya
How would you pronounce Arya?AHR-ya
AH-ya
AH-ree-a
Other?Just wondering. I love the Japanese Aya (AH-ya) but am kind of worried it could get mixed up with Arya. What do you think? How do they pronounce it on the show? Do you know?I personally don't really like Game of Thrones and would not really love for my daughter's name to be associated with it.Does Aya remind you of the show/books in any way?Do you prefer Aya or Arya? Please rate my list: https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/6232

I wouldn’t use Arya if you actually dislike the GoT franchise. I don’t particularly like Arya anyway, it sounds too much like Aria which just means “air “ in Italian.I don’t particularly like Aya either, in spite of having a dear friend by that name, it’s a bit too short and inconsistent for me.

AH-ree-a, sometimes approaching AHR-ya but still with 3 syllables.I don't think it's too associated with Game of Thrones because it's also been used on other popular characters and it's very close to Aria. Aya doesn't remind me of Arya at all because I use rhotic R. And I think someone putting Arya into Katakana would do アーリヤ or maybe アーリャ, but not アーヤ or アヤ.I prefer Arya because it's longer and looks more complete (and I prefer Ayano or Ayako to Aya for the same reason) but Aya sounds good too.

AHR-ya or AIR-ree-uh. It's pretty. Prefer Arya. I don't associate it with GoT at all.

The way they pronounced Arya on GoT was incredibly inconsistant. According to GRRM, it’s supposed to be AHR-ya. Two hard sounds. Not like Aria which is soft and flowing.I tend to pronounce Arya AHR-ya for the same reason. Aya is similar sounding but not identical. With Aya, the sounds flow more together. It’s a much softer sound. I wouldn’t worry that some people might mix them up. Some might but you risk that with loads of names and it’s quick and easy to clear the confusion. You could also argue that Aya as a name has a much longer history than Arya. I associate Aya with a character from Green Lantern The Animated series. And she was a great character. I enjoyed her MUCH more than I liked Arya Stark. I prefer Aya.
